Cheap item but pictures in listing don't show blemishes

Bought this $10 truck emblem: and the black letters are crisp and solid. What I got was this:

undefined

Numerous scratches on the letters that go through to the backround. Looks like seller used a different photo. Not something I would put on a 2016 model truck. Not an expensive item at $10, but don't want to throw it away and eat the cost. Should I contact the seller first or file SNAD directly with Ebay?

ATI...

Ebay always pressures buyers to go to seller first for resolution.  BUT Ebay does not warn buyers that mos dishonest sellers will lie to them--and try to string you along past  Ebay deadlines.   In  this situation  you already know that this  seller  IS  dishonest because he showed you a  Stock Photo   of this item---but sent   you an item that is used and in  very bad  condition.  Smiley Surprised

If this had happened to me--I would  go straight to  either the MBG program--or go  to the Resolution  Center  (found at the very bottom of this  Page)--and file a Snad Dispute with Ebay (significantly not as described.):smileyindifferent:

Since you have 30 days from the day you get the item to open a case, I suggest messaging the seller and letting them know you are not happy with this and asking for a return label and a refund.

If the seller ignores you or doesn't give a good answer go to the Resolution Center and pick I received an item that does not match the seller's description. Follow the directions to return the item and/or get your money back. The seller will have to pay return shipping.

There is a link to the Resolution Center on the bottom of every page on EBay. Make sure once you open a case not to close it for ANY reason until you have your refund. Also keep up with the case and have eBay step in when the option becomes available. Do NOT let the case time out.

Contact first, see what response you get.

If no response, or not a good response, open the case, not as described.

Wishing you luck.

This may not be the "popular" response, however, I see blemishes on the pictures in the listing (small scratches, etc.) and not stock pictures.

i saw some scuffing in the listing. what you got is worse! my guess is they will just refund and not want it back. that will sand out and buff but even for free, the labor might be more than a replacement.

That is completely untrue and its unnecessary fear mongoring. Ebay pressures buyers to open cases in the resolution center. Try contacting one of your sellers some time. You will think you are sending the seller a message but ebay will actually direct you straight into opening a case. Its been a huge complaint on the boards for years now. Its hard to actually contact a seller through ebay because directs you to the resolution center.

I am also curious. Do you know what a stock picture is? Did you look at the listing the OP linked? The seller didn't use stock pictures, its quite obvious. So I have to strongly disagree with your statement that the seller is dishonest because he used stock pictures. He took his own pictures.

@atikovi,

Did you look carefully at the seller's photos?  I see pictures of 2 possibly 3 different emblems, with scratches in different places on them. The one you received doesn't match any in the description.  When I opened the seler's description, and read it, I was ready to hit the back button. No Returns, then Returns only after receiving an RMA.

I do not buy from sellers whose policies are longer than their descriptions and mostly say what you can't do.

Seller's listing shows 3 different plates.  They at least had 4 when this listing went live (could've been more in the past).

I can clearly see scratches in the black lettering on at least 2 of the plates.  The 1st, on the S & T.  The 2nd, on the S.

I think their description lacks quite a bit.  It's "used" but they do not describe any blemishes and the piece you got looks to be the worst in the bunch.  If the scratches were less, I'd say you don't have a SNAD return, but I think you do now as that one is quite beaten up beyond what any pictures show.

Me?  I'd contact the seller first and let them know I was dissatisfied with the plate they chose to ship and that none of their pictures show any in such rough shape and with that amount of loss to the lettering.   I'd attach a copy of the the picture you posted here.

The reason I'd go this route first is because while the seller doesn't offer replacements/exchanges in his return policy, he might be willing to ship one.   As I rarely have multiples, or if I do it's such a limited qty, I never have chosen the "exchange" option when setting up a listing, even though I might be able to.  Once you open the SNAD request, his options might be limited.

If he wants to send a replacement, I'd easily give it another week.  If it doesn't arrive, then I'd open the SNAD return.

Requesting a SNAD return isn't a bad thing if the thing really is SNAD.  If handled properly, it shouldn't impact the seller's account standing.
