Just saw the automatic checkout for first time when trying to bid on an auction item last minute (have seen it a few times on BIN type listings). Ended up not bidding trying to deal with that. Also, the listing had several ship methods listed, one being an inexpensive ground option which I wanted to use but there's apparently no way to choose that now with auto checkout, it just defaults to the first listed ship method price. Am I missing something?

Thank you for sharing those screen shots. It appears that eBay has enrolled your ID to require you to put up a payment source in order to BID. It has been a function that requires the seller preferences to remain in the Default set to Yes, AND enrollment of your ID. Many sellers do not know these exist:
https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/buyerrequirements
Buyer Payment Requirements
*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they place a bid.
*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer.
Click submit.
Though these requirements served to limit a buyer's payment choices, and auto-bill them individually as the auction closes, or an offer was accepted, eBay is re-arranging how both of these work.
It is good to see they dumped that "new improved smoother good for you" notice that neglected to mention to buyers that combined invoices to save on shipping were no long viable. Buyers are not stupid, and figured out quite quickly that it was truly NOT FOR THEIR CONVENIENCE and simply refused to comply.
There have been many posts about how the "make offer" feature has been changed, no more auto-billing for buyers, no more instant payment for sellers. Buyers who make offers now and are accepted, don't have to pay at all. Go figure.
Information regarding changes to 'auctions', however, has been almost non-existent other than for those buyers who complied with the payment source requirement in order to proceed to bid, were to have a three day delay before auto-billing would commence. To see that you can't pick a shipping method via this screen is quite interesting.
Since eBay remains mute on these intended changes, tests, enhancements that look like glitches, we have to rely on information, screen shots, and experiences of others to find out what is going on. eBay is not big on information, they just DO IT. Thank you for your contribution!

The info given by in the previous reply is correct, except for failing to mention that ebay enrolled sellers into the Autopay without their knowledge months before releasing an announcement telling them that, just before the 4th of July weekend. Then they promised to fix some of the issues auto pay has caused, but it has been six months without a peep out of them.
What I have started doing when time allows is to start to place a single increment bid days before an auction ends, and if get the auto pay pop up, I stop, and message the seller to let them know they have been opted into Auto pay with instructions on how to opt out, if they do not want to use it.

Great thanks for the responses and especially the link ittybitnot provided. I will let the seller know about this ebay implementation. Over 25 years using ebay and I'm asking myself was this supposed to help or hurt sellers. Because as a not-too-often seller myself, I wouldn't want it on either. I often do last minute bidding to my personal highest dollar amount I'm willing to spend and if this auto pay pops up with 30 seconds left I'm not bidding on it.
I've also never won an item and didn't pay for it... hey ebay does that make me a minority? Must be the case if you felt like you needed to implement this rubbish

FYI both the auto pay buyer requirements check boxes were checked in my account, and I definitely never received an email, message or anything ever saying this was being implemented. Nice transparency ebay, by implementing seller options behind their backs without letting them know while at the same time eroding buyer confidence by severely limiting their bidding rights and options.

If the procedure is still basically the same as it was last month, you will now get the pop up before you make your FIRST bid with any seller that retains the preference. There were a few reports a few months back that stated once you "set that default" you wouldn't be asked again, ever and when you went to pay your auction wins or request an invoice after winning multiple auctions from the seller you presumed turned off the requirement, the cart was blank since they were all paid for already, individually, at full shipping price. . I think eBay got rid of that particular short lived surprise aspect for we have not heard anymore about that per se, and you get the pop up when you start bidding.
Yes, the pop up was displayed to buyers "mid stream", even though they had been bidding on the same listings with the same seller for days previously. I figured is was just that buyer's (un)lucky day or moment eBay forced the buyer ID into compliance.
Do understand that they are changing things around NOW, and what the procedure is NOW, may not be the procedure they start rolling out tomorrow. Do not expect any announcements. It would not surprise me if eBay made the payment source mandatory for everyone and quit telling buyers it was something the SELLER chose and their fault and to ask them.
LOL.. you cannot send a link on the the page in an eBay message. eBay removes all links even if they lead to an eBay page.
It is always something around here.

Nice job explaining the intricacies of the prepayment clusterfluck!
Now if you ever discover how to tell the difference between a temporary glitch and an undisclosed change (in a reasonable amount of time) … please let us know. 😋

@house*of*paws
That was, or course, the SHORT VERSION. The new 'accepted offers', that morph into YOU SENT AN OFFER, and the buyer does not know if their offer was accepted or not gets YOU HAVE AN OFFER with no accept button is harder to explain.
No more auto-billing for offers, no more instant payment for offers, buyers don't have to pay for accepted offers at all anymore with no consequences if they don't. Let's not forget that sellers are unable to contact buyers whose offers they accepted or send an invoice for multiple accepted offers. And the whole thing looks like ONE GIANT GLITCH with buyers still pissedoff when they have to put up a payment source in order to proceed to bid.
Then we have posters screaming that we made it all up, and crying about no more auto-payments for offers they accepted, and of course we all work for eBay, who is SILENT and ignoring tags here.

It almost sounds like a hostile takeover / buyout of the site. If the logo suddenly changes to Xbay … we’ll know who dun it, and it will all make wicked sense. 😼
[My internet wiped out for the entire day after my last post … so I’m all in on conspiracy theories. LOL]

I hate this autopay!
So does every buyer, it seams.
I'd say take 2 stars off when rating the transaction for forcing this on us.
May this will make it go away.
