Auction Cheating

I can't find an extant thread that I can reply to,they seem to be locked or no option to reply ..

This is my first thread so I apologise for any breaches of etiquette.

I have bid on quite a few things here & there & it seems to be like..like I'll be the highest (& likely the only) bidder, then when the time is up suddenly it will say 'This one got away' ,then you see the item up again in the period after..it's like they weren't happy with the amount & wanted to gamble again on getting a better price .

Not sure what this kind of cheating is called..but it's a little bit annoying.

I just wondered if anybody else feels that this has happened to them..

If someone else came along at the last moment & made a higher bid then you would expect to of received some sort of notification to that effect.

Re: Auction Cheating

If a bidder  it places in the final seconds of an auction, there is not time for you to receive an outbid notice or place another bid before the listing ends.  Most bids do come in in the final seconds.  It's the highest bid that wins not the last.  If you were outbid, you did not bid high enough.

If your winning more than about 25% of the auctions your bidding on, your paying too much. That is not set in stone and you can bid more for that rare item you just have to have.

Look into using a bid snipe service to place your bids.

Re: Auction Cheating

That's not his point. He's saying he lost the auction and some one else bid but yet it still didn't sell and was relisted.

Re: Auction Cheating

It's just how it is. If the seller doesn't like the price he may have someone else he knows bid or himself bid(from diff acct) and that way he can just relist and hope he gets a better price next time. I  don't always get the "you've been outbid" if I bid in the final 2 seconds, which is when I always place my bid.

Re: Auction Cheating

There is a seller's fee on an auction if there is a bid on it and it was cancelled...or if a friend purchased his auction there is still seller's fees that will be charged.

I won a few auctions this week and these last seconds bidders are out there. LOL I ended up putting high bids so I would not lose the auctions. And I won them.

One auction I won had two bidders who had bids on the last second mark....but I put a high bid on it and won.

Notifications come after losing or winning the auction.

Notifications someone out bid you I have not seem come by email in the last few minutes....it's more like 10 minutes I get a notification someone outbid me.

Re: Auction Cheating

It's just how it is.

No its not and never should be. Any seller that does that if caught should be banned from listing auctions at all.

To call that scenario "auction cheating" is like, like, extrapolating from incomplete, you know, data.
Talk about annoying.

". . . . then you see the item up again in the period after . . . ."
How would you define "the period after" ?  eBay is not timed like football or  hockey.  A seller can start an auction at any day and time of day he/she wants.

I think what happened, based on what you describe, is that somebody else besides just YOU saw the listing and decided to put in a bid.  The bid was in a higher dollar amount than yours.  When the specific auction time ran out, that other person's bid was still higher than yours.  So, yes, eBay would send you an email saying, "This one got away."  Life goes on.

Then consider this possibility:  That other bidder was a flake or a jerk and simply Did Not Pay the amount of his winning bid.  Again, talk about Annoying !!!  Unfortunately, this happens to eBay sellers seemingly all the time.

The seller wipes away his/her tears and decides to try again.  This time, he/she wants to rule out all the Sport Bidders and wants to sell the Thing to somebody who is serious.  And he/she increases the price, thinking that, surely, if the Thing is that desirable, somebody will pay his/her current asking price.

As an eBay buyer, YOU must decide how much YOU want to spend for any Thing you see listed as an auction.  Then don't bid any higher than than amount.  If you lose in any eBay auction, it will be because somebody else was willing to spend more money than you were.

Sellers may have more than one item.

Re: Auction Cheating

Perhaps the "someone else" who won requested that the seller cancel, or did not pay.  We'd have to see the time frame for this to figure out what happened.  There are penalties for sellers who cancel because they were not satisfied with the price.  Can you explain where the "cheating" is?

Re: Auction Cheating

There was 10 seconds left the auction was at 75$ than I put 85 and instantly it was 86. There was 1-2 seconds left when I hit 87 instantly it was 88. This is maybe what he means. They had an ai bot cheating so no matter what they won.

That means you were bidding against a bidder's hidden maximum bid amount that was at least $88 or more. That is how bidding works on eBay for every bidder, including you.

eBay only displays enough of the high bidder's maximum bid to beat the second highest bidder's amount by up to one bid increment.

In order to become the high bidder you must bid higher than the current high bidder's maximum bid amount, which is hidden. Rather than bidding repeatedly in small increments, on eBay it makes sense to decide in advance how much you are willing to pay, taking into consideration any shipping and taxes, then bidding that amount once near the end of the auction. If the bid amount is a round number, consider adding a few odd cents to lessen the chances of a tie that would go to the earlier bidder.

Because eBay only uses enough of the high bidder's maximum bid to beat the second highest bidder by one bid increment at most, and because it is possible for another bidder to bid at the end of the auction without leaving enough time for other bidders to react and bid again, there is no benefit to bidding less than the maximum amount you are willing and able to spend. Bidding less just means you can lose to a bid amount less than the maximum you were willing to spend.
