A book that looks like nothing.

There are quite a few books that don't look like anything special. Here's one:

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

Sometimes we have a book dated 1865 or thereabouts give or take a decade or two. If I find the book is not worth selling either way and if there is an inscription, I do a little research and sometimes find a museum or library archive happy to accept it as a donation to their archive. With a photo of the book and a confirmation or letter of receipt, that book that was old but looked like nothing was a win-win for both of us...the museum or archive enjoys owning it and we get a small but accountable tax break.

Most booksellers are doing so poorly they don't have to worry about paying taxes this year... they are in the soup lines!

Right... not on this site! As Proud Mary sings we're we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river!

not doing what Otis Redding fans on eBay are singing... just sittin' by the dock on the bay!

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

I purchased a like-new used copy of Neil T. Anderson's Freedom in Christ Study Bible (published 2002) a year or two ago for 50 cents at a thrift. Beautiful Bible, interspersed with a lot of teaching commentary. Never checked the online pricing because I knew I was going to gift it to a friend at church, who appreciated other books Anderson had authored, which I did. Yesterday he told me that he was looking online (probably the River) for another used copy for a friend and the prices listed
were unbelievably high. I checked and sure enough - 6 used copies listed were from $100- $377 !! Pricing seems to me to be all over the place - and - I know these are not books sold, just books listed and not sold. Completed listings yields no results. A search on eBay yielded similar findings:

http://catalog.ebay.com/Freedom-Christ-Bible-2002-Hardcover-Illustrated-/2426958?_dmd=1&_fifpts=1&_fsct=&_in_kw=1&_ipg=50&_oexkw=&_okw=freedom+in+Christ+Bible&_pcatid=4&_refkw=freedom+in+Christ+Bible&_sop=10&_trksid=p3286.c0.m505&_udhi=&_udlo=

There are copies in Spanish which are priced more normally.

Just surprised to find these listed at such high prices. Can't understand why, first of all??

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

Thank you, vintage. It is out of print. Another one that sells regularly, if you will recall those olive green covered Living Bibles from the 70s.

Here is the publisher brief description: A one-year study Bible highlights Scripture passages to lead readers through a thoughtful, comprehensive, and practical consideration of their identity and growth in Christ.

One of the things we learned by having a store and selling on the internet, new and used and antiquarian/collectible, is that it is not uncommon for us to have inventory that waits to sell for up to two years or even more--then suddenly all be gone within a few weeks.

It is almost like the old story of nothing wanting something until you can't have it.

Since our storage is not overflowing to the point of needing to obtain more space, it is to our advantage.

It is inevitable that once a book goes out of print there are many who then want it. When new begins selling regularly, we know it is time to check our pricing. Stock on sites may be dwindling, and the collectible ones are still desired by the original buyer.

Just have to keep an eye on movement flow of inventory.

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

NASCAR Winston Cup '88. Published by UMI Publications as part of a long line of NASCAR yearbooks. For some reason the 1988 is very scarce though other years are quite common. I just sold a copy for $350. There was one listed on Amazon without a DJ for $74 but that got snapped up almost instantly.

Wiring a Continent: The History of the Telegraph Industry in the United States by Robert Luther Thompson. A few listed on Amazon with the cheapest at almost $100. I just sold a copy with no DJ for $85.

Energy from the Vacuum: Concepts and Principles by Thomas E. Bearden. Published 2004 in paperback. New copies were priced at around $95 with used copies going in the $70 range. However they just did a third printing and lowered the new price to $50. Still a pretty solid $30-$35 book used.

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

Back to Aldin - this time to the Painting Books series (ca 1915) - in reasonable condition these usually go for low to medium three figures:

From the collection, In English:

#1 The Farm Yard (Dutton)

#4 The Doggy Book (Lawrence & Jellicoe and E. P. Dutton)

#5 The Baby Book (Lawrence & Jellicoe) - a pleasant surprise that recently popped up out of the blue

#9 Doggy Tales (Lawrence & Jellico)

#11(?) The Poultry Book (number doesn’t look like the others)- (Lawrence & Jellico)

The numbered books - black number in upper left corner of front wrap - are of a series under the general heading of “Cecil Aldin's Painting Books”.

The Cecil Aldin Painting Book (apparently is not one of the series) (E. P. Dutton)

In French:

#7 La Legende Du Joueur De Flute (for no good reason I’ll assume the English version would also be #7 and from the illustrations assume the title would be The Pied Piper of Hamelin - one of only four titles listed by Heron)

Le Livre de la Basse Cour (unnumbered)

Chiens Et Chats (unnumbered)

All under the heading “Les Coloriages de Cecil Aldin” - published by Hachette, Paris.

All are unpaginated with paper covered card wraps - some cloth textured, about 20 pages, sewn, and very fragile.

Heron lists only The Puppy Book, The Normandy, The Cat and Dog Book, The Pied Piper of Hamelin. That I’ve never seen a copy of any of these in English is a bit frustrating!

The 2008 UK first edition of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With Dragon Tattoo is already fetching near $1000. The US first edition is $150-$350, and will escalate once the US movie is released.

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

I remember I picked up a library copy of Dean Koontz' Hanging On for 35 cents from a Village Thrift store. He's one of my always read authors, and I had never found a copy of this book before. I read the book, then re-sold it on eBay for $75 a week later. I since found a paperback copy of the book which is still on my shelf.

Re: A book that looks like nothing.

I also found a copy of a book that I bought in a huge collection for an average price of about 7 cents per book. I thought it was a German book, and since I studied German in high school, I thought I'd put it on my shelf and try to read it one day myself. Several years later I dusted the book off and opened it up.

The book wasn't German, but was an unusual English book, entitled:

Ladle Rat Rotten Hut by Harold Chase.

It seems that Mr. Chase's grandfather came from the Old Country and had a deep accent, and count never get the English words pronounced corrected. He managed to mangle every word. But he would always tell Harold stories and fairy tales. "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut" was the story of Little Red Riding Hood, with each and every word in the story mis-pronounced to sound like a similar word. Another story in the book, I believe, was "Tray Ladle Picks" for the Three Little Pigs.

I checked on abebooks.com and there were only 6 surviving copies at the time, with the least expensive going for $175 and the most expensive for about $300.

Someone put a Want up on eBay's old Want Board. I looked at the book, which I had already read, and sold it to the person for $150. Not bad for a 7 cent purchase.
