will not sell for what the bid was

I listed an item on ebay and I am very new to this. I had a buy it now price of 40.00. A bid was won at 11.58. with 14.00 shipping. I will not sell this item for 11.58. I have emailed the buyer and got no response yet. I do not want to get bad ratings, but I wont sell for this price. Should I start the bidding higher next time? I thought a buy it now price was what the bid should go up to?

If anything the Buy It Now is a maximum (or it would be if it didn't disappear, usually after the very first bid).  What led you to believe that it was a minimum?

Unless you pay the fee for a Reserve Price (7.5% of the Reserve Amount with a minimum of $5.00; whether the item sells or not; every time you list it with one) you are promising to sell for as low as your Starting Price.  So just set your Starting Price at your true minimum you are willing to sell for at this time (don't forget to figure in fees).

Hi @robsauto1974

You should start the bidding at the lowest amount you are willing to accept for the item ... because you are expected to ship the item to the winning bidder if they pay.

The 'Buy It Now' option just allows someone to buy the item outright before the bidding starts.  The BIN is designed to go away once the bidding starts for most categories of items.  It does NOT protect sellers from having to sell the item at a lower price if the bidding ends low.

@robsauto1974

You starting your minimum bid price at 99 cents. If you did not want to sell it for at least 99 cents, you needed to increase your starting/minimum bid price. If there was only one bidder in the auction, you would have had to sell it for 99 cents. Be thankful there were 5 bids.

When you are notified that the winning bidder has paid, you ship the item.  as required. If you refuse to sell it to the winning bidder, you will have to face consequences > a defect from Ebay plus probable negative feedback from the buyer.

Remind yourself in the future to always start the bidding at the LEAST amount you would be willing to accept to sell the item.

What are the consequences from Ebay? I understand I may get bad reviews.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I was under the impression I had to start the bidding at .99. I buy all the time, but just decided to start selling. I guess I should send the item, I really don't want to let it go for the 11.00. I wonder what the worse thing is that could happen? Negative feedback I could deal with, an issue from Ebay and possible charges would be horrible.

1. If you receive negative feedback, other buyers will avoid buying from you since it would drastically lower your overall feedback percentage (to 75%) since you have only 4 positive feedbacks for the past 12 months.

2. Read here about Seller Performance Standards and defects:
