< change to list view as your default view while searching >
On your search results page there's a View button. Hover your cursor over that View button and a drop down menu will open. On that drop down, click Customize. You can set the default to List. Set some other defaults too.

Were you actually going to the Customize popup or were you just selecting the List View option directly from the dropdown menu (the latter is for this search only, the former is what changes your default permanently--or at least until eBay messes with the page again and messes everything up again)?
Were you clicking the Apply Changes button when you finished?
