I would not advise a buyer to close a return prematurely and give up his protection. There are scammer sellers who talk buyers into closing returns on the promise of action and then disappear. You don't want to be thought of as someone in this class of scammers.
There are a couple of ways to handle it...
You can send the replacement and indicate that in the return along with the tracking #. Then let eBay know that you have sent a replacement. I've done this many times without a hitch, but it does make a seller a bit nervous.
If you don't want to handle it that way, instruct the buyer to return the item for a refund, and then list the replacement item so he can purchase it as a separate transaction. When the first item comes back, then refund.

If the Return is in progress it takes priority. Buyer would have to cancel it from their end. If you send a replacement before they end the return and they return the original item you will have to refund them.
Message them that a replacement is not possible while the return is still active, cancel from their end.
