ebay problem or mine ??

A buyer purchased about 20 items from me. I am attempting to invoice him with the discounts I am giving him, along with free shipping. Ebay invoicing doesn't seem to allow free shipping AND a discount adjustment  The following is what I see:

Invalid discount amount. Please enter a discount less than $0.00 (shipping).

Is there a way around this or am I just not seeing it ?

There is no way around it - you can not offer a discount greater than the shipping amount. You can send a manual refund after payment.

That is what I have been doing, but it seems ridiculous to do it that way.
