buyer swapped out stamps with fakes

Hello,

I had a buyer win an auction on some stamps ~$500. We had a stamp dealer in the family and saved some specific items of value. The buyer stated upon receipt that they were "fakes" or "counterfeits". and weren't described properly so EBay would permit a return. They weren't fakes and they had standard glue on the backs and had previously been hinged as dealers will sometimes do.

I called and spoke to EBay reps immediately, I sensed a scam. I was advised that either I allowed the return or they would step in a do it. I forced them to. The stated they would make the buyer prove their claim. I don't know of any proof provided and that can be faked as well. The return was granted by EBay.

The product was returned to me on my dime. The stamps were all swapped out with copier copies, no glue on the back, no previous hinges. I immediately open a case with EBay security. Days later, EBay sided with the buyer and now, obviously, I am out the sale and the product.

I am not a business and can't take these scams. I've been working with EBay since 2000 so I am not a newbie.

I am now, more than ever, skeptical to use EBay, especially for items that buyers can swap out.

I could appeal the decision but, have no new evidence to support what has happened.

I've been wronged, is there anything I can do? How do I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks for any suggestions.
