If you sign out of eBay or erase your browser cookies, you will need to sign in again and provide your password. I believe that has always been the case with eBay.
If you did not need to provide your password previously, perhaps you set up your browser to remember your password or else you used the option to stay signed in rather than actually signing out, and you did not erase your cookies.
