Refund your buyer and file a claim with USPS.

Your buyer should keep the item and the packaging in case USPS wants to investigate. They may say that the item was not packaged properly.

If packaged correctly, items don't break in transit unless something drastic happens (like the package is run over by a truck, a fire, etc.) Extreme handling is normal handling. You should package an item so that if you were to bounce it down a flight of concrete stairs, it would be perfectly safe.
You can try to file an insurance claim, but if USPS deems the packaging wasn't sufficient they won't reimburse you. You can file online here and attach photos of the packaging and broken item.

The post office may or may not want to inspect the item, so you'll have to ask your buyer to hang onto it and hope they will cooperate with the inspection (they are not required to).
If you need packaging advice, post back and we can help.
