Yes, this is a particularly common problem. The scammers target new sellers believing that some will fall for it.
Legitimate buyers pay for their items through eBay checkout. If someone is asking to contact them outside of eBay, offering more than the asking price, asking you to add gift cards with the order, or wanting to pay some other way, don't even respond.
You can help prevent this by listing your items as Buy It Now with no auctions, no best offers, and immediate payment required. That way, the item isn't sold until they pay. To see the options to uncheck best offer and add immediate payment required, click the Business/Advanced link at the top right of the listing form.
