How can you tell if there is a sales tax on an item before you get a big surprise at check out.
sales tax on large purchases can be a deal breaker.
no one at EBay could answer.

Go to the listing page and click on the Shipping tab.
Also you can use this link to check to see if you live in a state that requires Ebay to collect sales tax on items shipped to your state:

Sales tax is collected by eBay on behalf of and based on the sales tax laws of each state.
The amount of sales tax is based on the laws of the state the item is shipped to. If you have been charged sales tax, then you know your state is requiring eBay to collect it.

Put the item in your cart, then go to your cart, it will show the sales tax. You can remove the item if you don't want it without checking out and paying for it.
Afraid just about every state has online tax now through ebay and certainly has me going directly to smaller personal and business websites that aren't charging it when possible.
