The envelope is 6" x 9" x 1/8th" . I bought USPS First-Class shipping through eBay and it was returned with this note.
Tracking not valid on letter or flat size mail. For tracking service on non-parcel mail, use priority or certified mail service.
Does anyone know why I got this? I have sent many quilt patterns with no returns.

Stick a few packing peanuts in the envelope to make it thicker. A package needs to be 3/4” thick, or at least that was the requirement. Last time I looked, I did not see a minimum thickness, but your PO is still following that rule.
So make your package thicker and it should go with no problem.

I need help understanding the difference between USPS Ground Advantage and USPS First Class Package, which eBay now gives as choices. If I use priority mail, it would cost me $7.96 to mail a $10 pattern.
I used USPS First Class pkg. I wouldn't call my envelope a pkg. And it seems ridiculous to put packing peanuts in a letter-size envelope. (6" x 9")
Thanks for your help. I think eBay has overlooked small businesses.

First class package has become part of ground advantage. If you select first class package when printing your label, it will print a ground advantage label - the label purchase pages tells you this. eBay offers the services that the PO offers.
If you want tracking, you need to send your item as a package. It may physically be an envelope, but in the PO’s language it is a package if you want tracking, and must be 3/4” thick.
If you don’t want tracking, you can pay at the PO to send it as a flat (also called a large envelope). No tracking means full refund if the buyer says not received.
