Scalping is illeagal. That is buying limited number highly sought after items and reselling said items at a huge mark up to the consumer. How can ebay take part in the ILLEAGAL and UNETHICAL practice of taking advantage of desperate parents and fans by asking (in some cases) more than twice the retail value of gaming systems. I run a popular you tube channel and I will be showcasing theese dubious practices to bring awareness.

You (and many other people) are misunderstanding the meaning and legality of words like “scalping” and “price gouging”. Scalping generally refers to resale of event tickets, which in most cases don’t legally belong to the person reselling them. Tickets - even after they’ve been purchased for the intent of attending an event of some kind - still legally belong to the event promoter and/or the venue where the event will take place. So, laws set a maximum limit (10% in most places) of how much over the face value of the tickets they can be resold for. Selling these for more than that amount (which varies depending on where the event is being held) is illegal.
Price gouging specifically refers to placing high prices on items needed for public health and safety during an emergency such as the pandemic. This is why early on eBay banned the sale of masks, hand sanitizer, and similar items. In my area, we frequently get hurricanes in the summer, and stores are not permitted to charge higher prices for items needed for safety in these events.
As you can clearly see, gaming consoles do not fall in either of these categories, so sellers can ask whatever they choose since we live in a free market system. eBay is attempting to control the issue somewhat by severely limiting the number of game consoles that can be listed on the site at any given time. What would really change this is if buyers would simply stop paying these prices. Then the sellers would be stuck with something they couldn’t sell and would be forced to lower their prices. As long as people are willing to pay these prices, sellers will keep asking them.
