Paypal disappeared from my account, and unable add it back

I've been using Paypal as my payment method for 10+ years. I last used it about 3 days ago. Today, when I tried to bid, I got the error message that I must add a payment option to be able to bid. Checking my account, I see that my connected Paypal account is missing. Trying to add it back, I only get credit/debit card options.

(The chatbot was useless.)

What happened to Paypal? Why was it removed from both my account and from the payment options?

It's still available for payments, including in the confirm screen to set up and consent to pre-authorization of payment when it is required when making a bid or offer (but PayPal Credit and Pay in Four are not available then--if it says the payment source will be charged one hour after you win that is to give you time to checkout manually to use those and for other reasons).

eBay got rid of the "link" PayPal account function years ago, after eBay sold PayPal and the transition period in the contract was up.  PayPal is simply one payment method among several now.

Another possibility:  if you are bidding on a high dollar item (don't know what the cutoff is these days) item a credit card is required to bid.

What exactly does the "error message" (or confirm screen) you got say (screenshot would help, if not copy and paste the text).

I remember when eBay and Paypal parted (I've been an eBay user for 20 years), but I've been using Paypal to pay as recent as 3 days ago.

That connection has disappeared from my account in the last 3 days, and when I check my profile, there are no payment options associated with it. When I try to add something, only VISA and Mastercard credit/debit cart options are available. (Pop-up with card number, small VISA/Mastercard logo, and card details fields.)

What is the item you are trying to purchase?  I recall that Paypal is not accepted for specific types of items, but what those are escapes me at the moment.
