Looked at item and somehow it was automatically purchased

I was looking at an ebay item--just looking--and all of a sudden a page pops up that says I purchased the item. I contacted the seller immediately, but the message is that it can take three days to respond, and the item will be shipped here by then. I am a long-time Ebay buyer/seller and this has never happened before. I am really upset because I didn't authorize any payment at all. It seems like fraud to me. Ebay's message to me is that they will see if I'm eligible for a refund!! I will contact my credit card company tomorrow to make sure this charge does not go through, but gotta say, my confidence in ebay is pretty shattered. How can they allow a sale to go through that never happened?

It is not possible to purchase an item if you just looked at it. You could have accidentally clicked on Buy It Now. Ebay has implemented automatic payments to avoid non-paying buyers, so your purchase could have been automatically paid for.

The seller is not obligated to agree to your request to cancel the transaction, and if they don't cancel they are required to ship the item.
