I'm not asking about saving a search but about saving preferences like "buy it now" or "price high to low" to come up with each search without needing to set them each time.

You should be able to customize some search features like sort order and number of items per page. That can be done using the "Customize" menu option that appears at the top of your search results page where you can choose between list or gallery view in the upper right.
For filter options like auction or buy it now, you may be better off creating a sample search and then bookmarking or saving the search. Then use the bookmark as a starting point when you want that type of search.

You can't save those auxiliary preferences without saving an actual search.
Once you 'Save a Search' with all the extra preferences ... you can use that Saved Search for subsequent searches ... just changing the key words for a different item.
I hope that makes sense, because it's more difficult to describe than to do.
