How do I dispute an eBay shipping fee update?

I received an email from eBay stating that Fedex adjusted the weight of one of the items I shipped.  It was a 17 ounce softball bat that weighed 20 ounces with packaging.  I used 20 ounces for the shipping weight.  The eBay shipping update page claims the item weighed 24 ounces, and even better, they rounded up the item weight to a full 32 ounces.  I checked the FedEx tracking and they only list the weight as 1.2 lbs (19.2 ounces).  There is no record of a weight adjustment on the FedEx webpage.  Is there a way to dispute this, eBay customer service has me going around in circles (probably intentionally)?

Were you charge more shipping?

Fedex shipping rates are based on whole pounds. One pound is 16 ounces. Your item weighed more than a pound, so would automatically cost the 2-pound rate (32 ounces). Your eBay label would have charged the 2-pound rate.

Next, there is dimensional weight. What did you provide to eBay as dimensions?  Dimensions should be rounded up to the next whole inch. If the package is large for the weight, there is a formula to calculate what a box of that size would normally weigh, so a higher dimensional weight could be applied. Check your dimensions here:

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, they added about 50% of the original shipping charge as the adjustment.  I knew in the past that FedEx rounded to the next pound, but I don't understand why the eBay shipping calculation changes price by the ounce.  I thought maybe FedEx changed the pricing policy.  I also don't understand why the shipping cost changed if I didn't exceed the next pound in shipping weight.  If you round up, 1.25 lbs should price out the same as 2 lbs.

I don't think it was the package dimensions because I did round up to the next inch and have shipped several bats in the past without an issue, all in the same box.  However, if the weight calculation by eBay is inaccurate, maybe the dimension calculation is as well?

So eBay calculated an inaccurate shipping cost based on the accurate package information provided, undercharged the purchaser and charged me the difference.  That's not right.

Hello bchatelle

There has been a known issue with FedEx labels since March 27. EBay has been aware of it and has been contacting Sellers with adjustments. I just checked now, and there is still an open ticket on this. If that's what is happening here, you should hear from eBay or you can check your payment source for credits. Best of luck.
