Help with ended listings sitting in "unsold" folder

Just a couple question for you experts; I was told that if I ended a listing, changed it, and relisted, that it would show as a new listing. I'm not finding this to be the case. Do items have to be ended for a certain period of time for that to happen, or was I just misinformed? Also, do "unsold" items get deleted by eBay after a period of inactivity like "drafts" do?  Thanks for all the help!

Once you END a listing, use SELL SIMILAR and make any changes and then resubmit the listing.  It will then show as NEWLY LISTED with a new item number.
