Ebay asking for SS#

I recently got 2 small deposits to my bank account, which I reported to Ebay, reportedly to verify my information. Now I am getting emails asking for my social security number or my EIN (which I don't have). I am not inclined to give my SS#. Is this legitimate?

@yeahrightorange

Yes as long as you are on the eBay website or eBay app.

eBay is required by federal law to have your social security number to issue a 1099k for your sales if you reach the reporting threshold.

It's secure.
