Do I have to use the return label generated by eBay to return an item I purchased?

I purchased a thin, long-sleeved t-shirt but the size did not fit. Luckily the Seller accepted returns, but the Return Label that eBay generated (USPS Priority) cost a little over $12. Considering the weight and size of this item it would have been cheaper for me to create my own label using USPS Ground for about $4-5.

I sent the item back using the eBay generated Priority label, but I'm wondering--could I have instead created my own label with Pirate Ship for USPS Ground which also comes with tracking?

Depending on the seller's return policy, and the reason for the return, determines who pays for return shipping.  I haven't had a return in ages, but back when I did, the labels all stated Return Shipping using first class package and it was good for up to 70 pounds.  Since you were able to see a priority shipping for $12 it would appear the return shipping has changed.  You are able to use your own shipping on a return where you are responsible for the return shipping.  All you would need to do is to upload the tracking number showing the return is on the way.

Just to add - you can no longer update the tracking # yourself.  When you use your own label, you have to ask customer service to enter the tracking # for you. It is usually still worth the effort,  when you can buy return postage for less.
