HI Everybody!! I'm still "fairly new" here & saw this thread & thought I'd share my story.
In June of 1991 I lived in Maryland and I worked for the
Coast Guard in Washington,DC as a civilian. My 1st
steady boyfriend had broken up with me in March because
I was "too nice", whatever that meant.
I was set up on a date with a coastie to go to the Gulf
War Victory parade on June 8, 1991. The date was nice,
but it was like being out with a friend or a brother.
Anyway, I had forgotten my camera & went back the next
day to take some pictures of the displays and had the
soldiers sign a poster for my 5 year old sister to take
to Kindergarten for show & tell.
I met a lot of very nice soldiers & there was one in
particular that was friendly & talkative. He signed my
poster, but I had run out of film & didn't get a picture
of him. The display he was working was right next to
the Smithsonian Metro Stop that I had to get on to go
home & he stopped me as I was leaving & invited me to
have dinner with him.
Well, I said I'd meet him at Murphy's Irish Pub in DC,
because I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but I've
never been a very assertive/outgoing person, so I wasn't
sure that I'd go. I got home & my mom was upset with
me for going into the city by myself & we got in a
fight, so I changed clothes, grabbed my keys & went to
meet my new friend. I figured if I drove & he ended up
being a jerk I could always leave since we were meeting
in a public place.
Well, that day changed my life. We closed the Pub,
sitting there in a nice little booth talking about our
lives & interests. His birthday is the day before mine,
we both had young siblings and so on.
Anyway he went backt to Camp LeJeune the next day with
my phone number & address & called me 3 days later.
Every weekend after that he either came up to see me or
I went down to see him.
We were married 2 1/2 years later on September 11, 1993
& we will be celebrating our 11th anniversary tomorrow.
We didn't get to spend our 10th toghether because he
was in Baghdad while I was home with our 2 beautiful
children.
He is a wonderful, caring man who I am so PROUD to call
my husband and my friend.
Sorry this is so long, but you did ask & that's the whole story.
Thanks for listening. 🙂
