I believe that it is possibly off of a part of a plow horse harness called a "hane" if it is brass.

Actually, that would be "hames" and this is one tip of a pair. The hames, supported by the collar, hold the traces. (Learned this stuff at my father's knee. He farmed with horses and mules. Yes, I am old!)
