 I got this at auction in 2001 in Albuquerque. My sister calls him mudhead. Any idea what he is? Many thanks!

I would suggest trying to find someone who knows about native american artifacts. The red striping might suggest some soft of possible native american link. You might also try posting it to a doll forum.

Yeah-MAYAN Doll Head****a fiber cord held a cloth or reed body to the neck base****if your selling it-just list it as such & state that you're not a expert****
