WIP: Altered Book Project #1

I approach my art mostly seriously, with an goal in mind and a standard that I strive for. Silly me! But that is how it is ... so there are times I do things for 'fun', and altered books as well as other arts and crafts are what do it for me! Years ago I taught various crafts which included 'memory books' which were altered books, but usually only few pages were altered so that it was more a display item. I've also done some scrapbooking/rubber stamp and many paper projects since then, too, as well as teaching. This past weekend I took the time to join in with an altered book project and thought I'd show you some of what I did there. It is a book that has been cut into a ♥ (heart) shape (when opened). I still have much to do on it. Hope you enjoy this... ~Jillian

This is a beaded edge - and I LOVE it. It's what made me decide to do the workshop. It's unfinished - as are all these. MUCH more embellishment etc is needed. First added distress inks to one page, then about 8 pages later added inks to another. Then tiny hole punched 1/4" in, 1/2" apart, small holes. Then added beads using blanket stitch, using waxed linen thread. Blanket stitch allows the beads to sit outside the page, so they don't get in the way of book closure. You can add threads and so forth to the end of the beading, and decorate the page anyway you wish. Some of the best results are gained from mixing beads very randomly!

Here two pages have been ripped straight across, removing the top round part of the heart. All 4 pages have been treated with distress inks, then stamped with a daisy rubber stamp. I still want to do more to this. Then the edges of the torn pages are glued to the page underneath, to create 'pockets'. Decorative tags and mementos can then be inserted into them.

This is a multiple folded pages exercise. You can fold as many pages as you wish, each one folded progressively with less paper folded in, so that it becomes 'stepped'. You can glue down the folds, or leave them to be opened, with 'surprises' underneath. You can attach altered shapes to the folded pages. The pages are all treated with distress ink and rubber stamped. This looks stunning if each page is a different color, with much more contrast than I am showing.

Here, a printed graphic sheet has been glued from the middle, to a 2-page spread, then torn off, to leave a ragged edge both inside and outside the book. Before gluing, a slit was added, and glue selectively applied so that it ended up being a 'pocket'. A tag was coated with graphic paper off-cut, and distressed, to be inserted into the almost invisible pocket.

This is more about the tag, than the page(s). The pages are distressed ink treated, then rubber stamped. A tag is coated with a photocopied element of a distressed hand, then stuck to a regular tag. In this case, a hand. The hand is colored over. The hand shape is then cut out. A fancy paper clip is used to clip a decorative heart cut-out, to the hand.

I was supposed to cut a square through about 8 pages, gluing them together, adding lace and a transparency. I decided to glue 2, and 2 pages together, sandwiching lace and transparency in between both, so they could be viewed individually. And instead of a square I decided to to a rough kidney-type shape - different on each page. I distress inked all. Many more elements to be added to this, so it is mightily unfinished.

The vibrancy of the colors can't be shown here. They are 'Golden' metalics - almost like chrome. The excercise was re combining two contrasting pages. Individual connecting pages, but then to combine to showcase the contrast by turning down the heart curve, so the contrasting color could be seen. The flap is glued down. You can also glue the side so that it becomes a 'pocket'. I have left it open, as I love the contrasts here. Needless to say, unfinished, with lots of things to add.

I like this one a lot. 4 pages. Again used distress inks to color, and rubber stamps to embellish. Then travel graphic rectangle 'tags' used to embellish. Two pages are treated and glued together in the middle. Then folded in, and top folded down. This is all glued. A travel graphic attached to thin card is then stuck on this, with an embellished tag - but done in a random manner. You can see from front view, and from rear. I also strengthened the attachments using a decorative stud. I wish I hadn't stamped the black stamp on the final page, but with altered books I can 'fix' that easily by tearing out the page, or sticking stuff on top, or painting over it.

AIM: To add a multi-page 'booklet' with tag pocket into an open page. First the booklet is made, the pocket being made using a coin envelope, and textured paper. Oh my but I LOVE the wonderful papers available! Color photocopies of hands - all varied were used as embellishments, and a tag was put into the pocket. There is also a stamp on the rear of the tag. The tag is shown outside of the pocket in the 'b' image.

It was certainly Fun Ellen. Though I got a bit frustrated. Doing so much, ran out of time. There are still a couple of individual page projects I didn't get to do. And another that I haven't put into the book - using modelling paste & gesso with a stencil. I went, also to learn more about walnut ink, as the teacher is/was an 'expert' in this, and just didn't touch on this at all as time (4 hours) was too short. :( Still, I have her book, and am sure I can figure it all out.
