I have high speed dsl, but I am sometimes relegated to an old slow computer(any time my wife is home). On that machine I have disabled flash, quicktime, and anything else that is supposed to show moving pictures. I also have images blocked from several sources. Don't tell anyone, but I even had to block Jillian's opening page animations. Animated gifs, even emoticons slow the thing to a crawl. I panic when I go to a page that has that kind of stuff, because I may never get out.
I spent a lot of time learning how to put fancy things on web pages but took them all off of my site after I tried to look at it on a dial-up connection.
An old acquaintance of mine has big high resolution images of his paintings on his site and finally put up a disclaimer on the splash page that basically says if you can't afford high speed internet, you can't afford my paintings so don't bother trying to look.
