Question about fixatives...

I was wondering if any of you have experience with fixatives and similar products by a brand that starts with K (for some reason I'm thinking we can't talk brand names, but maybe I dreamed that?) I have the workable fixatif and today I purchased some glitter spray (because I do love sparkle) made by that company. They also have a perserve for inkjet images, which I thought was neat, because when I sell an original ACEO, I keep an inkjet copy for my own book. But I'm afraid to actually USE these products, because of all the warnings about how hazardous they are. Hopefully, I'm just being a paranoid freak, but I can't be the only person wary of using a product that says it has chemicals that may cause cancer... So let me know your thoughts. Is it silly to think I'm going to wind up with permanent nervous system damage by using this stuff every once in awhile, or is it really that dangerous and should I return it to the store and get my money back? Thoughts? KJ, the paranoid freak 🙂

I hope theyre not too terribly bad for you, I use them a lot, so Im in trouble if they are....but I do make it a point to do all my spraying outside....I couldnt stand the smell even if it were healthy.

I guess I was just dreaming the not being able to use brand names, then, huh? And, doing it outside seems like it'd be the best option, but then you've got the 'don't use in high humidity' warning, which isn't a problem now, but in South Carolina? In July? Yes.

Question about fixatives...

After hearing that things like even some carpets giving off formaldahide, and working from age 8 with some very old poisonous oil paints that were labelled such. I have a tendency to be careful, but not get over stressed over it all. I'm sure if we knew what many things had in them we would avoid them. I think I remember this one ... crisp bacon has a lot of nitrates I believe, which is supposed to cause cancer, but that is the only way bacon is served in the USA. I LOVE bacon, by the way. At one stage they were saying it about diet drinks. Be careful by all means. I have a friend that does wood restoration, and sprays all the time with no breathing aparatus. I am sure that is not healthy.

If it's true about diet drinks, I've already done myself in, so I might as well start sparying everything down with Krylon.

they do make little masks that keep the chemicals out of your lungs. they're diffent than the ones that just keep dirt and germs out. speaking from personal experience, i strongly suggest them when using chemicals, if you love breathing.

I agree that you SHOULD take all precautions that you can. But at the same time not become obsessive over them as they can end up ruling your life. I work with someone who washes her hands for 10 minutes before touching ANYTHING, and after touching something.

You try to hand her a piece of paper, and she won't take it. You have to find somewhere to place it. VERY frustrating. She's only new, so don't know how long I can last like that.

Question about fixatives...

Just used some Krylon, Permanent Protective matte finish on a couple of my watercolors. (STOP) don't use this junk. It put a haze of white dots all over the paintings. I managed to get it off using mineral spirits. I went back and read the instructions, I had followed them precisely. I shook that can for at least 5 minutes. Maybe I got a bad can, I don't know but I'll never use the stuff again. Ron
