Prints and the term OOAK

hi all. my original paintings i do are one of a kind.. i don't paint any alike. i have been putting OOAK in most of my listing. my question is this... i am getting ready to make prints, and wonder if since i put OOAK on the originals, that it would be a problem to make prints of them? any info on this subject greatly appreciated!!! annamarie

To me, a painting is a painting, and can't be duplicated, it is one of a kind. Since prints are duplicatable (is that a word? 🙂 ), they of course are not one of a kind. A print is not an original artwork, so, to me, you are NOT duplicating your painting. To me it is the painting that is OOAK. Others may feel differently. ~Jillian

ok thanks jillian. being so new to the art world itself, i didn't want to misrepresent my work. and so many have toldme since i don't paint the same thing twice i should make prints available. thanks for the help. i'll keep watching this thread to see how others feel. annamarie

When you've created an original painting, even if you WERE to paint another one that was similar, they'd still both be original and OOAK by default. You inherently own the rights to any art you've created and therefore, it's perfectly acceptable to make prints, cards, etc. of it. It sure wouldn't bother me if I owned an artist's original and they made prints of it - I'd have the original and that's the best version! If I like a piece that much, I wouldn't mind sharing it with others via prints :) Of course, that's coming from a fellow artist - I totally approve of being able to make money from "secondary uses" of our work. -Ann
