Making your own mini-canvas boards?

Hi, everyone! I have an idea for using my left-over gessoed canvas to make aceo-sized canvas boards and wondered if anyone had done this. I remove some gessoed canvas from stretchers, as it had been dented in storage. (This is canvas I stretched myself, not pre-stretched commercial canvas.) I would like to glue this to double-weight illustration board, pulling an extra amount around to the back, in the same way commercial canvas "boards" are prepared. I would also glue a backing paper to hide the edges on the back side. Has anyone ever done something like this? I see aceo oil paintings done on canvas paper, but I haven't seen mini-canvas boards such as this. Can anyone give me some advice? I need ideas for what kind of glue would be best. I'm thinking acrylic matte medium, but wonder if there is anything better. I want to avoid bubbles, etc. I'd be willing to make a few of these for whomever can help me do this successfully! Thanks! Nan

Oh, also I think it would be neat to have other things ACEO size, especially gessoed masonite board. I love that stuff.

Yes, I'm on Fredrix (sorry spelt it wrong before) advisory board. They cut up some watercolor canvas for me 2.5x3.5 which is why I have been offering free samples. I think I found a 4x4, and also 3x5" You can get clayboard (clay on maisonite) from ampersan dot com (think I've spelt that right), in ACEO size!!!!!!!! YES!!!! I know that is unbelievable, but true. ~Jillian

Well they have clay on one side. I think you can get them in the white, and also in black. But clayboard is just clay on maisonite, as far as I know. Check it out, you'll soon see. I saw these in packs of 10 a a couple of local rubber stamp shops. ~Jillian

Interesting thread. I have been thinking for awhile of taking some canvas and glueing it onto a wood block which is about 3/4" thick. That might be the closest thing to a creative edge. I have also painted on muslin. I would first apply white fabric glue (Stiffy) and let it dry which would make it stiff and just paint away. I made some dolls this way.
Jillian - I bet if Fredrick's was aware of how popular the ACEO size is, they'd get on the ball and offer up some canvas in that size. They would sell like crazy. That would be great!

Well Joan, the last meeting I was at, I was raving away about them, and they just kinda looked at me. They did humour me by cutting the canvas when I requested some, so they do listen. But I need to shout a little louder. HA!

All they would have to do is come to eBay and search out ACEO and they could see for themselves. I'm sure they or another company will be producing that size, just a matter of time.
I hope it's sooner rather than later.
Maybe a mass email campaign requesting that size - who knows?
That's cool that you are on the advisory board.

Nan: It's fantastic! Someone will love it! Somehow, the canvas just makes these small pieces more "art like," which regardless of the foundation, they're art, but, anyway...Now that you've done this, I'm sure that you agree! Yours is great! Good luck! Penny 🙂

"YES" glue is an all purpose stik flat glue that is very easy to use. It should work well. It's just another glue to check out. Barbara

acrylic medium OR cellulose wallpaper glue (PH neutral) that is used for mounting fabrics etc., plus brayer. the wallpaper glue is very inexpensive. a box will last years. it's what i've always used for making large canvas panels as well, using canvas & masonite.
