ACEO commission pet portrait idea

Hey all! I had an idea about doing pet portraits in an aceo size. Do you think that would fly, or do you think people might not bother? Personally, I would love to have something like that made, and I would think that, for a collector of aceo's, they might like that, too? To have an original made of YOUR pets, horses, etc... Hi ya, Jen! I think it is a great idea. I was thinking of doing something similar in "people" portraits. I don't really know how it will go over, but I think that it's worth a try and when things settle down here, I'm going to do just that. You never know. Take a chance. (I have actually been looking for a pic of my little springer spaniel mix, but nothing ever comes close.....hint.... 😛 ) I hope others will chime in with their opinions. I have seen people do this. I'm not sure how successful they are. You have to be careful how you word your auction. Believe it or not, there are ebay guidelines on this, as it is techically considered a service. You might like to take a look at the ebay category for 'specialty services'. Jen, I have done a few commissions of ACEO's. Usually they are commissioned by other artists or by someone that has seen something I have done and want something like it. But, it is difficult for me to quote a price on something like that. If they saw an ACEO that I did that sold for $20.00 and they want something like it do I quote that same price or charge more??? Usually if it is a friend I don't charge as much. I usually leave it to a higher power. My wife decides. hahahaha

hey jillian, thanks for the tips!! 🙂 I will go check out that info, I hope that i am not breaking any rules! I do everything thru ebay, so that is not a problem. I charge $24.95 for an aceo commission and have a listing in my store. I have one out for auction to see if I can get traffic.... no luck so far. but it is still early :-) xoxo you all 🙂

Hi Jen...I did a 8 x 10 pet portrait for someone who requested it...then I thought I would list it in my store and one auction...I listed it for a choice of sizes including aceo...choice of buyer...but after 2 listings, I still haven't had any bites...maybe my price is too high...I'm gonna rethink mine...but maybe you will have a better chance at it...sounds like a great idea. I would think that there would be a market for this. wishing you success! Eva

I've had folks ask me to do stuff based on what they've seen in my auctions. I've never been able to sell the art for more than $15 though. Seems like folks don't want to pay more than they would bid on a normal auction for ACEOs. I thought $25 would be a good price for a commission, but most folks choke on that. Oh well. Explain how long these take, my ACEO's are at least three hours, then ask if they would work for that hourly rate! Ken

Hi Jen, your cat looks great! I've been approached with custom ACEOs. One guy wanted me to paint a nude of his wife and I believe I was going to charge $25, but I never heard any more about it. Even these little aceos are time consuming, at last for me. I usually spend 3 hours on mine. Personally I think you have to figure at least $10 an hour. So far all of mine have been going in the $10-$15 range. I'm hoping it starts to become a little more lucrative considering the time I put in... Good luck to you...
