Future Projects: Ideas, Suggestions, Etc.

Please share your ideas, thoughts, constructive comments, etc., about future projects here! If you've shared them in the 52 Card Deck discussion and want to relocate them here, that's great! I don't think whole posts need to be copied and pasted, but the ideas and suggestions themselves in simple form would be most excellent, so we can start a list we can all refer to easily! What about a 'round robin'? People sign up just like for the swaps. Then toss the coin. Everyone starts an ACEO and send it either up or down and the second person adds to the card then sends it to the third person. Four people add to the card then send it back to the first person who started the card to keep. Everyone ends up with an eclectic card. -- Lissa From the house the dachshunds let me live in!

Lissa, I LOVE that idea! Here are a few other ideas I've had - some that maybe others can build on? Stationary - Make cards, envelopes, stationary sheets with a different aceo featured on each one Coasters, like the cardboard kind you get in brew pubs Posters - You know those ones with 99 beer bottles on them? We could do 99 aceos. You know the paper book plates schools use to list dedications in the front of their library books? We could make aceo book plates. Aceo labels - You could use them as bottle labels, or to label books and school supplies, files, etc. Somewhere, I saw where you could get software to create your own stamps, out of your own designs. If anyone is famiiar with it, we could make U.S. Postage stamps from aceos. You all did the cookbook before I knew you, but we could do recipe cards, with an aceo featured on each one. Aceo bookmarks Money holders, for gift giving. The sleeves for gift cards Silkscreened items like beach towels or blankets or pillowcases checks

If there were some way to get them all together in one place and cheaply make enough prints so that all the contributors could get all the prints, doing an ACEO Mosaic Artwork like that horses one would rock -- grid out a larger design, work it up in basic colors and then send a random section with areas blocked out for "use these colors and values" and paint what you want within that, so everyone's ACEO was its own drawing/painting but the whole comes out as a mosaic artwork. It might work best to carve the original into a small number first and do one with sixteen sections or twenty sections at first so the groups doing them don't have hundreds of prints to buy to make up the mosaic, but if the cost of printing weren't so high it could be set up like the cards were. I don't know where you could get the right printer for that idea though. But small mosaics with a dozen sections could be group things like each contributor makes a dozen prints and mails them to all the other contributors, must be ACEO size 300dpi. Then set up multiple groups if there's lots of signups. I'd love to see it and I don't know how that'd be organized. But the idea is out there now. -- robertsloan2art -- original ACEO, OSWOA and larger artwork. A big part of life is recognizing that creativity is human. Yeah, it is! I wanted that idea out there for people to think about and with this thread, we'll always have a lot of cool ideas floating around for what to do next after major projects. -- robertsloan2art -- original ACEO, OSWOA and larger artwork. The recipe cards is a good idea, and a natural spin-off from the cookbook. They could be in batches of five or ten, brought out every month (three months, whatever) to encourage people to collect. Maybe cocktails, canapes, appetisers, mains, desserts, cheeses, coffee, vegetarian, chocolate, icecreams, candies, cakes; or themed by ingredients (ten wonderful things to do with stale bread 🙂 ) That sort of thing. Laminated, maybe. -- Edited by angelacmoore at 07/12/2008 10:58 PM PDT

Robert, I'm all for the mural/mosaic as well. Now that would be a fabulous project...and so interesting to see how it comes together!

I'm still hooked on the idea of a Tarot deck. That would be so very cool! When my life settles into some semblance of a schedule and I have some time to dedicate to a project, I might take that one on. -- JeanneY

What are the goals of these projects? If we want to promote our group, that would be a different set of projects from something that would be used to generate profits in resale, or something that we're doing just because it's fun, or something we're doing to benefit a charity. I think with whatever we choose, we might want to put a little thought into why we are doing it. I guess I was thinking of things that I could give away as teacher's gifts, hostess gifts, etc. I think the mural idea is awesome, but I don' think it would generate revenue. It would raise aceo awareness though. I love Lissa's round robin idea, but that would be for fun, not for profit. Maybe we end up doing projects from several categories - projects that result in profit for the artists involved, charity, fun, things we could give away as gifts, promoting the aceos on ebay...Or, are we trying to find one thing that does it all? Projects in several categories are fun and artistically stimulating. In essence, the projects we've done are conducted primarily to promote the aceo movement and not necessarily to generate profit for the artists involved. As somebody in the group pointed out earlier -it would be monumental task and would require an accountant, a sales agent and co-ordinator and lawdy knows what-else. Anyone who is willing to take that on board is...ahem...welcome to do so! 😮

I have a general question: Should ACEO projects always involve art that is ACEO-sized? In the case of the previous books, I have not seen them, but I have always assumed that the pictures in them were 2.5 x 3.5 inches in size. As for the card deck, the cards themselves are 2.5 x 3.5 inches in size and, of course, with the watermarks, each final "ACEO print" is actually 2.5 x 3.5 inches. When I think about some of the suggestions here, I can not envision them with ACEO-sized art. Now, that may or may not matter. I just bring up this point for discussion. -- ~ Marci ~ Click here to see my current listings :-x -- Edited by ozziepuppy at 07/13/2008 9:55 AM PDT

Good question, Marci. I guess I pictured any project we do with the artwork to be ACEO size, but I may have been assuming things. I actually had that thought in mind when picturing the projects. For a book, I visualize the art/illustration to be ACEO size and then verbiage if is a rhyme book. For a journal, an ACEO sized artwork on each page (or more than one per page) with either blank space and a border or a lined page for writing. I'm anxious to see the layout of the cookbook to see how Tess handled this. Deb,I was thinking of these projects as "fun stuff" - not much probability of doing them for profit. The only profit I can envision is to buy extra for resale, but that would be individual speculation and not a lot of money in the end. Stranger things have happened than someone somewhere seeing one of our projects and adapting it for the mass market, but it doesn't seem likely to me. Someone with those resources would more likely use our idea to launch their own. That sounds awful, I know, but that's the free market and you can't avoid it. The only other thing I could think is that maybe ebay itself would promote something we did because it originated in an ebay group. That would need to have a finished quality product (or maybe just idea) and a well-thought out proposal. Well, I'm rambling. I'm thinking fun and gift level as you can see... -- Starr http://starrgirlsworld.blogspot.com/

I, personally, love the fact that I get a part of a completed "thing" when participating in these projects. If the "thing" can be produced at a reasonable price, I want to buy it for gifts or promotional tools for me to use...actually show off ACEO's. Sure helps having something ACEO sized to get the point across! Since size is the ONLY rule, I think it is important to make sure that size accuracy is always planned for during the conception or layout of a project. Since we aren't a funded group--and no one has stepped forward to bankroll any of these projects.... I think determining the profitability of a project is based on individual effort, cost to that individual, and access to the making of/obtaining that project(inventory/stock). All of that really will depend on the specific project. I mentioned to Rick, that If I had my wits about me sooner, I would have advertised the ACEO deck on my websites and accepted pre-printing orders for the card decks. My light bulb moment happened only after he had extended the deadline; even then I was able to take 27 orders but, sold them at cost.:-( So, I wasn't thinking profit. See... my moment just didn't have a high enough wattage light bulb!!;-) -- JDanni
