I don't understand why Ebay collect sales tax from buyers and deduct it from you earnings. Why ???

I sold an item for $97 - Ebay took selling fees of $13 and I shipped free and it cost me $9.95 and Ebay deducted this from my earnings - I don't understand if I am shipping Free why is Ebay deducting this.
