What recourse does a seller have if a refunded/returned item (Lap Top), when returned is not in the same condition as when it was sold

Had a Refurbished Upgraded Lap Top listed. Seller agreed to purchase at a Buy it now price. When buyer received it there was a password lock. I contacted Dell, with the Service tag number, was assured it was under warranty. Contacted Buyer who called...
