Shipping to Hawaii

I recently sold an item and anticipated shipping it from NJ to the continental US. I listed a flat $12 rate. The buyer is from Hawaii. The actual shipping is $30. Can I ask the buyer to pay more for shipping or am I stuck with the $12. rate. Thanks.
