Actually I found from another posting how to set it (finally!!). When
clicking on the 'Grid/List' view button, select 'Customize'. Make view
settings changes there and click 'Apply'.
The desktop site reverts item listings to grid view on every search. As
it was posted above, there is no current way to set a preference to use
