Silly question: The buyer received the item damaged in transit. She sent a message with a photo of the broken item with the slightly smashed box. Does she need to open a return request for me to give her a refund? (I don't want it back.)

I had a "buy it now" item listed for sale. I accepted an offer for a bit less. E-bay charged the selling fee based on the asking price instead of the price actually paid. This was my first sale so I don't know if that's way it was supposed to work or...
