No. eBay would not exist without small businesses.

Is ebay destroying small business? No.

The small business sector faces many challenges....always has, always will. Even if ebay wanted to, it couldn't destroy small business.

ebay is a tool small businesses can choose to use, or not use, just like every other platform that is open to small business.

No.

Most small businesses fail, sadly.   I believe the statistic is that half fail within five years and two-thirds are gone in ten.

Sure, federal, state, and local government regulations can be a factor in those failures, a larger or smaller one, depending upon the type of business, but it's never a primary one.

The businesses fail because they are the victims of unrealistic expectations, lack of even the most cursory market research, ignorance of even the most bare-bones fundamentals of commerce, under-capitalization, and simple laziness.

If anything, many small businesses have a better chance of succeeding on-line than they did in the old brick-and-mortar days.

What would eBay's purpose be in doing that?

Don't know exact figures, but would imagine a significant percentage of eBay's sellers ARE small businesses.

You need to change your numbers to 2 and 5 years.

And it is not the current administration destroying small business, that is just Trumpian nonsense.  Large corporations have always been at the forefront of removing competition, it is the essence of US style capitalism.  The political economy is rigged against small business just as it is rigged against the wage earner.  You want change then change the political economy and bring back the New Deal which was eviscerated by a long string of administrations, led by Republicans, but including Dems such as the Clinton administration.  Listen to folks Iike Bernie Sanders and Robert Reich, stop perceiving "socialism", the heart of the New Deal, as an anathema, and stop voting against your own economic interests.

Yeah, something is wrong when a lowly eBayer like myself pays more taxes than Amazon.

Well they aren't exactly promoting it very well.  An invoicing issue has been plaguing this site in various forms for 8 months now.  Maybe not actively trying to kill it,  but it's not always what you do,  but what you don't do that can cause as much or more damage.  That little update that decimated sales for near a month for many sellers sure didn't help small business.

Is eBay aiding in such:

It is damaged its own system:

the rest is due to economic costs: food cost, fuel cost etc, remove expendable income that small business needs to function with: eBay has nothing to do with that: worse it does hurt eBay as well..

Thanks for the correction on the numbers, meaning the failure of small businesses is even worse than I said.

I did grant that government regulation plays a role, as it always has.  And big fish trying to gobble up all the little fish is the way of the world and always has been.  (I will grant you that sometimes, some government actions can make that a bit easier or a bit harder but they can never stop it.)

I think we agree that there hasn't been a spit's worth of difference between Republican and Democratic administrations since about the Eisenhower administration.  For me, I've wished a pox on both their houses for at least the past 50 years.

Nevertheless, my belief is still that most small businesses fail because most of them are started by people who don't know what they're doing and don't have the self-discipline to learn.

Look at the constant posts we get here from people who don't understand how credit cards work, don't know that carrier insurance is for the benefit of the seller and not the buyer, don't know what a sales tax is and often don't even know the difference between sales tax and income tax, don't know what a contract is, don't even know there is a Uniform Commerical Code much less know any of it relevant to them, and demonstrate customer service skills that make eBay's look good.  And on and so on.

I agree.  Look at the number of people trying to sell on Ebay as a full time business who do not understand what a gross profit margin is or how many don't understand the playing field rules and get their panties in a bunch over having shipping and taxes included into the calculation for the FVF.  Or sellers who focus on the profit from a single sale rather than overall cash flow.  And the list goes on.  I try my best here to teach some retail business fundamentals here but for too many sellers it is hopeless.  Retail has always been brutal with very low net profit margins.  I am glad I am just trying to make some lunch money as I don't think I would want to try making a living here.

I agree. That’s why eBay is only one of 5 venues I use. Man does not live by eBay alone…….anymore!

Is your statement that you pay more in income tax than Amazon?

If so, may I humbly suggest that you get a new tax preparer or a CPA?
