cut to square

someone please define "cut to shape" for me . I saw a few examples today and they sure look like a "cut square", not "cut to shape". thanks from a long time lurker. Todd~

I want to thank everyone for their answers. After re-reading the answers of xbolts, dkru and jaywild and looking closely at the stamp I see the stamp was cut (extremely well) around the stamp. this is what was driving me crazy, I couldn't see that at first. Thanks again, Todd~
