2 different Plate numbers on US Scott 736 typical to issue?

Block of 6 with 2 different plate numbers 21188 and 21189 on Maryland Tercenturnary Scott 736 issue.

Is this the typical plate number layout of this block of 6?

Any idea of the misregistration of the 21188 on the left side?

This looks like an ink impression from another plate or looks like a fraudulent added number.

My Durland, shows both numbers to be valid plate numbers. I just don't know what the second one is doing on there. Is it typical for this block to have 2 plate numbers? My Durland shows no reference (that I can find) for this  particular stamp to have 2 plate number on 1 block.

Anyone else wanna venture an opinion?

I'd guess someone set something on the paper that transfered the odd number, similar to a kiss print. Very odd for sure. 🙂

Actually the “ghost” number looks more like it was etched into the plate then the image was scraped and burnished to remove it. Have you sought out other plate number blocks to compare with yours?

Seems like I sold a flat plate block a few months back w/ similar qualities , but I forgot what answer I gave.
