The Poll, Vote for change by force

It is in my opinion of great import to this group to vote in the online poll. In order to get the kind of group you, the ones who actually use it should vote now! At present only 4 dealers/dealer-collectors have voted to change things by force, this is clearly not enough. Unless you want the chess dealers who never use this site ,to loose their grip on the pure collectors who do, then you will use your vote to change things back to how they were before the internet brought this darned freedom and democracy. We dealers cannot start a new group of our own as we cannot exist without the collectors,so our only recourse is to pretend we are a silent majority and force change through. Do not let it appear we are only a gang of four,(and bear in mind before you get your friends to join and vote ,that the moderators aren't stupid and votes for change from people who rarely if ever go on to this site will not carry much weight. If we must resort to such tactics the rather say you never went on because there were too many people enjoying themselves. Always remember we want it to be like in the old days of the CCI, weekends away in exotic locations with hotels at £3,000 for 4 nights ,and if the poor collectors couldn't afford that then we let them come and listen to our pearls of wisdom for a mere entry fee of £600. Can anyone guess as to how I voted? (I know... you don't really care!) 🙂 Chesspurr, do you ALSO apologize for being my chessfriend? 😞 Please... no! Noybear, I myself actually do SINCERELY apologize for not getting back in touch with you after our last email exchanges a couple/few weeks ago. I will do so, and soon. To all... I apologize for not placing my photo up afterall - even after repeatedly leading you on... I do have an excuse, though... my "better half" has requested that I not place her in the picture too (something I had really wanted to do!) She also urged me to not post my own picture on the photo album because... "You don't know what kind of weirdos there are out there." While I THINK I can understand to what she is inferring... that is, too much identifying info on the WEB...) - on the other hand, she does not realize it is a little too late for that! John, Veirdmont. 🙂 PS: But I think I have found an indirect fun way whereby you can (kinda) see a photo of me... Warning: it could be seen as somewhat of an insider joke, however. PPS: FOR ANYONE WHO DID NOT INITIALLY KNOW HOW I VOTED, CAN YOU TAKE A GUESS NOW? 🙂 🙂 🙂

The Poll, Vote for change by force

The majority of votes so far (18) basically want to leave things alone without intervention. 14 want complete banning or confinement of chat. Just some commonsense and acceptance of everyone else’s point of view is required, because we are not going to satisfy everyone. The chattering classes should voluntarily minimise their chatting in the serious threads and try to divert as much as they can to the Chat thread. I am now trying to answer off-topic remarks or questions by transferring to Chat as most people seem to read it. In the case of the Cholet and Bloomsbury threads, several members attended or are going to attend the sales. By discussing drinking and eating arrangements in the threads, it is an open invitation to others to join in and socialise. Those types of exchanges are the indicator of a very successful group. A certain amount of banter is to be expected among friends, and as long as it is short and not self-indulgent, it should not be offensive or too intrusive. Jon, Guy, Alan D and I do joke and pass personal comments, but we also put in a huge amount of serious discussion in existing threads and new ones we have started. Let us all live and let live, but no one should indulge in excessive chatting or, conversely, try and censor a reasonable amount of off-topic comments. Alan

Hi, Alan of cpe1991. I think that overall, your comments and suggestions make sense. And ok... I will be trying to focus most of the longwinded ones and the banter to the Chat thread. I THINK I was getting pretty good at it until very recently, when the religion one and the "what is the name of these sets" (modern chess designs) came up... I would, however, like to reserve the right to excessive chatting - at least in the Chat thread, and perhaps occasionally in one or a couple of other ones. (Old habits sometimes die hard.) I realize the downsides to overvocalizing (including some/most people just ignoring such long postings.) But I want to point out that I do not require others to be brief (even when their comments are not at all well explained). But, your comments and suggestions seem reasonable to me. PS: (Were you referring to little old me - your favorite chess friend "John, Vermont" or the other imposter 🙂 jon of computojon? PPS: I may soon be starting my first initiated thread. It WILL be different, though "chess related". 🙂

Hi, John(V), There really was only one way you in particular could have voted, And I knew you were only teasing when you said you were undecided. There is an old Indian saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but to drowned it you need a mighty big stick" ;) Alan D.

Alan D of chessspy. I am glad to see that you appear to know me by now - to know when to discern my teasing from serious talk. Yes, as you had indicated many posted messages a while ago - on another discussion thread... you and I are from the old school of knowing how to B.S., eh? Then again, there may be some others who post who DO know how to do it much better than you or I... you know... the "M.S."'s and the "PhD."'s... though they just might deny it! 🙂 You DO know, right?... the double potential meanings, behind M.S. and PhD, right? I am glad to see that you and I might not always agree with everything that the other (you and I, for example) think and discuss, but at least you and I agree on the basic "right" of relative freedom of expression (I think.) John, Vermont, needing a good thrashing. 🙂

Hi gevork6 >>Sorry to be slightly off topic but I am a regular tenor...>> was very interested to read your post and would love to discuss further with you but this is probably not the place! My email address is on the email section if you'd like to continue this conversation? And no I'm not a counter-tenor I'm the type with balls, a proper tenor! Cheers. Colin

The Poll, Vote for change by force

The results of the Poll (82 Votes counted): Yes, it is very annoying. No need for non-chess talk like Rel. and Pol. 18/21% Yes, there are CHAT and Rel Pol for off-topic. Delete it from everywh. else 14/17% Yes, but the situation will improve without administrative measures. 16/19% No, I do not see the problem. 23/28% No, I actually like the way it is. 11/13% YES = 48 votes NO = 34 votes

The Poll, Vote for change by force

Actually Robert, As I read it, 79% of the members who voted don't seem to have too much of a problem with the way things are. I wonder if the questions could have been better put. I also wonder how many of the respondents who want change are frequent users of this forum. I would also like to add that for those few who don't feel easy with the free flowing way this works there is an answer, go and set your own site up. We know from past experience (e.g. CCI) that a group which excludes some collectors will not flourish, we may not all be wealthy elder statesmen of chess set collecting, however the future is with the younger computer savy collectors. The "old school" of collectors , who are used to buying and selling in relative secrecy will eventually have to accept that this brash "new"(to them) way is effectively a fait accompli. Regards Alan D.

I would rather say that 57% see the problem but the majority does not support further administrative action.

Alan, As I read it a majority of the members prefer less of off topic chat. Me included. Does off topic chat belong in a formal discussion thread? No, but I understand that it can be entertaining and is sometimes difficult to control. Rest assure I will NEVER exclude members because they post off topic messages in formal discussions. But I hope by having this poll and the discussion we are having, that everybody is aware of this issue. Best Regards, Robert

r.van.der.veur Hello Robert. I didn't get a chance to vote. I never even saw the poll. But I think that everything is just fine without change. It is not like the reading and or skimming over is very hard. If we start letting people call for votes on things where does it end? Like Nazi Germany? I like the comradery that has been produced by the current set up. I also know that there are a lot of brown nosers in here that will back someone who they think it will be advantageous to them in the future. So, if an "authority figure" is known to have a certain lean then the brown nosers will back them. Don't you think that this is true? Your avid supporter...Brad 🙂
