i recently bought a copy of chess sets by f.larnier graham. it was not expensive ,and its worth having , even though it came from another library !!! at least this book had a discarded stamp on it ,so its not stolen.
published in 1968 for any curious group members.
being an older plastics collector i was eager to read the 20th century section.
what a wonderful inspiring bunch of sets were photographed , and of course no bakelite as usual.
there are 5 photos of nuts and bolt sets , discussions on man ray , yves tanguy, julien levy , max ernst , joseph hartwig , richard filiposki, larnier graham , gerard ifert , and finally robert caples. all with photos too.
something seems very wrong here , nothing mentioned about known vintage makers like , chad valley ,drueke , pattenberg , horn , lowe , anri ,studio ann carlton , grays of cambridge , and a huge host of other makers of very varied styles. nothing in depth about the plastics revolution of the 20th century , no porcelain sets mentioned at all , the omissions are staggering ,it almost suggests the author was promoting his friends .then on top of that nothing about collectables like african , moro , or other assorted tribal sets .
i am not condemming his mentioning of these creators ,but his omissions.
mabye ,just mabye if a new book is written it might try to cover the neglected areas of 20th century collectables ,and if it is written the author might want to consult e bay user/buyers/sellers ,as taking research from previous books simply wont do the job properly.
