Chess Collectors books

In the last 6 years I have build a small reference library. For me are reference books a smart investment. The money you spend for a book can more than make up for loosing money by mistakenly buying\selling chessmen at a wrong price, just because you aren’t knowledgeable. Here is the list of my chess collector books not included my auction catalogs: Title: Master Pieces Author: Gareth Williams ISBN: 0-670-89381-1 Title: Chessmen Author: A.E.J. Mackett-Beeson ISBN: 0 7064 0050 X Title: Book of Chessmen Author: Alex Hammond Publisher: Morrison and Gibb limited, London and Edinburgh Title: The world of Chess Author: Anthony Saidy and Norman Lessing ISBN: 0-394-48777-X Title: Collectors’ Blue Books Chess Sets Author: F. Lanier Graham Publisher: Walker and Company, New York Title: Schach (Original title The art of chess) Author: Colleen Schafroth ISBN: 3-89660-125-3 Title: Chessmen Author: Frank Greygoose ISBN: 0668047666 Title: Cultures, Chess and Art: A Collector's Odyssey across Seven Continents: Sub-Saharan Africa, Vol. 1 Author: Edwin S Munger ISBN: 0964404664 Title: Cultures, Chess & Art: Volume 2: The Americas Author: Edwin S Munger ISBN: 0964404672 What books do you have?

Chess Collectors books

chesspurr (184 ) 03/26/07 08:30 AM i recently bought a copy of chess sets by f.larnier graham. it was not expensive ,and its worth having , even though it came from another library !!! at least this book had a discarded stamp on it ,so its not stolen. published in 1968 for any curious group members. being an older plastics collector i was eager to read the 20th century section. what a wonderful inspiring bunch of sets were photographed , and of course no bakelite as usual. there are 5 photos of nuts and bolt sets , discussions on man ray , yves tanguy, julien levy , max ernst , joseph hartwig , richard filiposki, larnier graham , gerard ifert , and finally robert caples. all with photos too. something seems very wrong here , nothing mentioned about known vintage makers like , chad valley ,drueke , pattenberg , horn , lowe , anri ,studio ann carlton , grays of cambridge , and a huge host of other makers of very varied styles. nothing in depth about the plastics revolution of the 20th century , no porcelain sets mentioned at all , the omissions are staggering ,it almost suggests the author was promoting his friends .then on top of that nothing about collectables like african , moro , or other assorted tribal sets . i am not condemming his mentioning of these creators ,but his omissions. mabye ,just mabye if a new book is written it might try to cover the neglected areas of 20th century collectables ,and if it is written the author might want to consult e bay user/buyers/sellers ,as taking research from previous books simply wont do the job properly.

knight_knight_zzz (79 ) 03/26/07 09:16 AM (#2 of 2) I believe I have the book you mention above. I will have to go check. (By the way, I have started to go through some CCI stuff.. and I think you might like what I have... give me some more time, though, to look some more and detail it for you. Right now, I am too busy commenting on your book and statements above...) Regardless, based upon my select(?) memory, I think you are right... I agree with you. Relatively speaking, very little on 20th century chess sets, not to mention any depth in plastics... Yes, it would be interesting to see a book on the most recent chess sets, with some detail, including as catalyzed by the dawn of the Internet and ebay, and the like. I look forward to such a book. (When you write it, might I get an autographed copy of the book? That would be a real collectors item. Ok, enough bantering and sarcasm, right? I would indeed like to see such a book. Books on chess sets are like anything else in life... there are omissions, errors, judgments, referrals to other books, etc. And, as with life, that will continue to be as such. Unlike my perfect chess playing ability, chess collecting and books about chess collecting are not perfect. HOWEVER, let me end on a positive and supportive note that I too would like to se such a book in the near future. Right at this moment, I am awaiting permission from a fellow collector (it's a long story - or at least I can make it into a long story... for me to be able to use info (or the entire article) I wrote on a modern manufactured chess set... So, as soon as I (hopefully) get permission, I will submit my first contribution to the Chess Knowledge Data Base on this ebay chess collectors group website. Ciao for now, friend! John. PS: I have one bakelite chess set (one side black, the other butterscotch... partially made with screwlike joints.)

blynch13 hi bill , for a starter collector the gareth williams book master pieces is great .easy to read ,good photos ,not expensive. i would read every thread in all of our discussions too ,as there is much to advise any collector, even on occasion experienced ones. my first chess book was the game of chess by harry golmebek penguin books , i learnt alot from this publication at 12 years of age. i also got no help whatsoever from my parents who had no interest in chess . so i guess it was easy enough to study ,even with the complex british notation i seem to remember. no doubt more recent offerings might be more suitable for todays pupils ,but i sure have fond memories of that nice book at the time in 1965 .

Hi All, For those members who are interested in Bobby Fischer, (and I know that there are some), there is a new book called "Fisching for Forgeries" by the american chess collector and CCI member Lawrence Totaro. See his website: http://www.fischingforforgeries.com/home.html It details how to tell bobby Fischer signature forgeries on Chess memorabilia.I will be reviewing this book for the next edition of "The Chess Collector" magazine. FLOYD: Hi it's Art...it would be great if CCI would procure that German catalog you mentioned and made it available for members to buy........is there any chance of this happening?.....Or maybe we can take orders and get a whole bunch all at once.......what do you think?? I'd love to get a copy of that catalog which you showed me at your house....lot of beautiful pics!! Get this: Even the library of Congress doesn't have a copy....since I'm in D.C. I checked......what if the president wants to start a National Chess Museum....he or she would be at a strict disadvantage....Floyd the mission I proposed for CCI may have far reaching implications for our nation....LOL!!! By making this catalog readily available to members, CCI will take a big step in alleviating much of the obscurantism that surrounds chess collecting....thanks!! Art (Gevork6)
