I am curious... why the closure of chat 2? And where is Kristjan? :( John, Vermont. -- Edited by r.van.der.veur at 11/04/2007 2:18 AM -- Edited by r.van.der.veur at 11/04/2007 6:04 AM

Re: Chat

Maybe time for some (more???) fun? Book cover (Maybe even a new avatar for me?) Any votes? Book, self explanatory (perhaps!) And an explanation (plot/story line)... (get out your reading glasses or your magnifying glasses!) Book description (The story/plot) NOW, we do see (every now and then), some folks in CCI as well as this group - and of course the chess collecting world as a whole - books written about chess collections, s tyles, and some related chess history... But it seems like I maybe be among the chosen few (ok, ok, "losers"? 😉 ) who has biographical type of books written about them!? Fischer, Kasparov, and Karpov, please move over! :-) John, VT. PS: Yes, this was once an eBay item on which I had the winning bid! I paid only $349 US dollars (well, actually, less than $20 as I recall...)

Re: Chat

Nice one John. Of course I will not be offering you any creditations for any sourced material from " Helens " publication. ;) Condolences to the USA, but at least it was a good and fair game. The winning goal being worthy of a superstar. This morning as an exercise I asked 9 people how they felt about England. ]:) The research findings were suprising, the man from Ghana expressed firm support for England, as did 2 scots, a Portugese, 3 English, with two Glaswegians showing the customary jovial " hatred of them ". I hope England do well, and if they fail, then Holland are my favoured team.

After today's results and my posting 1014 - Go Ghana! Mick ps I am thinking of changing my name by deed poll to Joshua Nkrumah 😉

Re: Chat

Well Mick, That was just about the best pile of " a Horse manure " performance I can ever recall seeing from a pack of over hyped, paid, and over here,so called super stars. At least the USA went down with some passion and lost to a superbly taken goal. The Germans were not even ran " klose " but perhaps the English ran out of " Cole " and were truly dead and buried by the end, burnt out. 😉

Re: Chat

Ok, d-Baron Duncan. Your turn! Chess, soccer (what the rest of the world calls football), even vintage cars... (Is there a car chess set, Duncan? How about a "Transformers" Chess set? If a Lego Chess exists, then a functioning transformers chess set should not be far behind. Clay Neubert (Noybear), any possibility of this, with your creative mind? Corptax Collector? Have you found any magic silver bullets chess sets? ;-) John.

Re: Chat

John, FYI: There is already a Transformers set readily available. There have also been a couple sets incorporating some automobile related items for pieces as well as one that I know of based on car emblems. There have also been several bullet based sets show up on eBay. The bullet based set that I have been working on periodicly is one that I considered having one side chrome plated initially but changes in pieces changed my mind for economic reasons more than anything else so technically the "silver bullet" concept is still open as far as I know ? Remodeling has gone from bad to worse and ... don't ask ! One of the few themes that I have never seen anything done with is airplanes. Blimps for rooks, biplanes as pawns, a bomber as king ? whatever and so forth ? Maybe a pilot as king and pilot as queen since there have been aviatrix women and combat pilots nowadays ? Guess it could be developed as jet versus prop powered A/C ? Clay Neubert

http://picasaweb.google.com/baron.von.drivel/ChessSetCollection#5420169145484755202 This Transformer set (1st and second picture in the link) was given to my oldest son by his girlfriend. But they broke up, he moved and no longer had room for it, so he gave it to me to add to my collection. He also said it was a lousy set to use for play as it was very difficult to tell which piece was which. It would be interesting to see any kind of car-based sets, no chevys though. :^O

Re: Chat

Good Sunday morning, and hi, "Guys" (minus the Guy, who's probably having too much fun in the "homeland"...) Clay, Noybear: ok I will not ask... But interesting, Clay, about the variety of items that could in fact be used to make chess sets, eh? No, I haven't seen one of aircraft, but your suggestions seem like it would work for chess (or other) aficionados of either air aviation, history, etc. I have a chess collector friend who has been collecting for probably over 30 years, and his other "passion" is trains. I have also never seen a chess set with a train theme, but I suspect one could be imagined and created. For our staunton cousins, I do have to agree that not much compares with playing with such a basic (and in fact pretty and simply designed) staunton set. But the creativity (in my opinion) would have to blossom from the left brain, rather than from the right. And I think you have both creative talents, my American brother! Now, d-Baron Duncan, I must thank you for taking the time and effort to link us to your ex-girlfriend's (.... er... son's ex-girlfriend's) gift of a chess set. Nice close-ups of the Transformer's set. But actually, (Clay and Duncan), I think I was not specific and detailed enough when I asked about a Transformer Chess set out there. Actually, I was thinking and asking about the original set of "transformer" toys that were "all the rage" when my (now 27 year old son) was a kid. Imagine a created set that could transform from made-up such items as vehicles and other thought-up items, into the devious and heroic mechanical wonders! OR, how about a set of (any themed) objects that could "transform" into a set of staunton chess pieces! The sky is the limit as far as creativity. So, if and when I see some such chess set on the Net, (ebay or chess website)... remember that you may have well seen that idea first seen right here! Maybe I can claim "ownership" somehow and get some royalties or some such monetary reward? (In this dog-eat-dog world, perhaps not, eh?) BTW, I am not talking here about such puzzle-like objects that can be disassembled into a chess set... such as some flat wooden puzzles, or the Commemorative Fischer-Spassky set, or the imaginative and rare Rocco brass cubes chess set. I am talking here about something rather different, if you "get my drift"... On a (very) side note, a few years ago, my son was aghast that I had removed his "Autobots" and his "Decepticons" from the original packaging (to save on space) where he had them stored in the once "play room" downstairs in our finished basement. I was doing a major clean-up and organizing down there. Little did I know at the time that doing such a cleanup would (value-wise, in the financial sense) decrease the market value of those Transformers. I think and hope he has forgiven me! Well, live and learn! Hmmm. Say, I think I will go and search out those Transformers... see how many he has, and then picture what such a chess set (composed of such pieces) would look like! Later, guys! "Gotta go!" (I use that phrase to impress our British cousins of my high ranking linguistic status over here in the States 😉 )... Time to do some driveway sealing work before the day gets too hot and a noontime July 4th celebration of parade, a barbeque at my doctor's house, and maybe even a game of chess! John, VT.

Re: Chat

John, If you search eBay for chess, train you will find a few Sante Fe R/R themed resin sets already available for typically varying prices. Is there any boy, anywhere, that has not had a fascination with trains at some time or another ? Am trying to work out a better concept for pieces than is being offered from the Far East. I am trying to work out pieces that do not use the figures of engineer, fireman/conductor and female passenger among other issues. To me. using figures makes it a relatively easy task. Steam versus diesel is a 'natural' choice also. So many possibilities but to create one that is good is a larger, more daunting task. Hang in there, someone, somewhere will eventually do something really worthwhile in this theme. Clay Neubert

Re: Chat

Hi, Clay. Thanks for the info on the train theme chess set. It must be a relatively new chess set (maybe a year or two at the most?) in the chess set market. I will forward that info to my friend (Mel Brass), here in the States. John.

Re: Chat

Well, just thought I'd let everyone know that I won't be around for a day, or two or three. Have to go in for some minor surgery. See you when I get back. What do you think the chances are that the Hospital Gift Shop might have some nice collectible chess sets someone could bring me as a Get Well gift? Yeah- that's right, probably zero. :^O

Re: Chat

Hey, Baron Dunc! You were gone??? 😉 Regardless, glad to see you back and I am hoping that your "minor" surgery took care of whatever little thing you needed taking care of... John, (always "out to lunch", but always present, even if just mere "chit-chatting" for zombies to check in on. Hey, somebody's got to keep the zombies (ugh! Chesspurr, I guess you win in the ComaTerminology afterall...!) alive while a Puzzycat Pauses Pawing for a fight...! 😉 Actually, I see that there has been sort of a mini revival here on the threads! Hmmm. Maybe time for an anti-lamenting limerick...
