i say about 50 percent of my customers actually come back and leave feedback. is that normal? is there a way to insure more feedbacks?

From various postings I've read, I have come to believe that 50% is very good. Just continue doing a good job. And I know that you know that asking for FB is not a good idea.

The nice thing about buyers who don't leave feedback, especially if they are not completely happy, is that they don't leave Detailed Seller Ratings either.
Those can be scary, Especially for a Canadian seller like myself, with about 80-85% of sales going cross-border into the USA where buyers expect very low postal rates and swift delivery.
Canada Post charges 63 ¢ for a letter rising to 85¢ in March. Parcels are somewhat higher
And of course, cross-border shipping means a stopover in Customs and a change from one postal system to another.
I do believe that leaving positive feedback early has advantages for a seller. You can use it to inform the buyer of the date and service used for shipping. You can stroke the buyer's ego. And you are reminding him to return the feedback.

Your post may be removed because we are not allowed to 'name and shame' other members on the Boards. Why? Just think what your deadbeat buyer might say about you, without this policy.
Also, the Strike he will get when he loses the case will be much more effective than posting on a Board that only a few hundred random members, who may not even sell in your category, may ever see.
He will not be able to leave feedback. Nor will you. You will keep your payment or get your item back.
Put him on your Blocked Bidder List and move on.

Hi, eBay stated that they would possibly raise my selling limit after I establish a good sellers rep and Paypal states that I will receive my money faster when the same happens. Well, my 30 days is coming up and only 3 out of dozens of buyers have left feedback. I have 100% positive feedback (70 positive feedbacks), but only a 43 rating. I know its from having many from the same members, but is that enough to raise my selling limits?
