I was thinking of listing something light enough and flat enough to go in a mail envelope. I realize this won't generate a tracking #... anyone else do this before?

Yes I have: but has that risk of no tracking.
Item was small enough and low enough cost if I lost it would not be a problem.

Some sellers do without problems. I choose to charge enough to get that tracking number.

I do it all the time on another account. I know if the buyer raises an INR, I'll have to refund in full. I'm fine with that. The rewards are far greater than the risk, at least for me. I sell old paper items, and the ones on that account are all low value. I sell far more without tracking than I do with tracking, and they all tend to do better individually than in lots.
If you are planning on doing this all the time, you can use Lettertrack. It is pure tracking. It does NOT have acceptance or delivery scans, so it will not help you at all in an item not received case. It's mainly for peace of mind, so the buyer can see that the piece has actually been mailed. I have an email sent to the buyer that shows the progress.
Five years doing this and never an INR ::knock on wood::

I personally wouldn't. I have before, years ago. In the current climate with things going missing so much with USPS, I wouldn't feel it was worth the risk.

I'll ship over 1,500 items this year with no tracking using a forever stamp.
If the minimum ebay label is $2.66 That's X 1,500 = $3990.00 in costs.
Using a forever stamp and forgoing tracking is $.55 X 1,500 = $825.00
I just saved more than $3000.00 on postage costs. If I have to refund a handful of INR over the course
of a year I've still saved a huge amount of money.
And, I buy forever stamps on ebay for about 40 cents each which just saved me another $225.00
Any order over about $15.00 gets tracking. It's a risk but it's small. Out of 1500 orders sent w/o tracking maybe I'll get 10-15 claims of INR.
