Did I do this right?

 

I contacted the seller first and told her I want to return the laptop.

How long do I wait for her response?

I suppose if she doesn't respond, I initiate a formal request for return?

 

background info:

She wins no prize in the brains department.

She shipped the laptop in a box without any padding or protection.

I was in shock when I picked the box up at the post office.

 

Laptop won't even run when plugged in to wall outlet. Dead.

No need to wait.   Either go into the resolution center, or your purchase history, and start the return process with the reason being Doesn't work or defective".

 

Since you imply that this is a novice seller, then I am assuming the seller takes no returns.  If so they will have 2 business days to either issue you a refund or a return shipping label ... if the latter, you will be refunded shortly after the laptop arrives back to the seller.  If the seller doesn't respond after 2 business days, then you will have the opportunity to escalate the return request so that eBay can get involved and get your refund.

I initiated the return. The seller has until June 5 to respond.

 

The issue may or may not be fixable with a new DC jack cable.

I would be tempted to try, but if that doesn't work, I would have spent $7 on top of what I spent for the laptop and all for nothing.
