what is the process when chosing " offer a different item". I shipped a very similar but incorrect item. The buyer wants to exchange that item for the correct one. In the past I just excepted the return, and at the same time sent out the correct item With a message that stated I was sending them the correct item along with the tracking number. And once it was received I sent another message with tracking information showing it was received and asking if everything was OK. Then over time the return would get closed by default or from the seller.
this time I would just like to do an exchange but I am worried if I offer an exchange
then it would allow the buyer to keep the original item.

I agree completely with your sentiment but in this case I created the problem and this person needs his part so I don't want to make him wait. That's why I was wondering how "offer a different item " worked.
I would just check the box and see for myself But I am worried that once I get to the next page I will be stuck with it.

But aren't you just creating problems for yourself. I mean why didn't you ship the correct item in the first place? Why did you assume the buyer would be OK with something different other than what they purchased? You said you had the correct item they purchased, but instead you shipped them something else?!?? I'm sorry, but I just don't understand why you would choose to do this!
It seems to me that if you had of shipped the correct item in the first place [which you had in stock] then this problem would have never happened in the first place.
