returning an item

This was a first in a long time that I had used Ebay, I thought I had done everything correctly checked sellers ratings looked good but as usual Murphy's law if anything can go wrong it will.  I am asking in advance as I am now wondering how this will work and what to expect.  I have asked for ebay to help.  I purchased a phone that was to be new, unused and unlocked.  I am need of one quickly as mine had broke so I also paid expedited shipping of $30. When setting up the phone it would not register with phone carrier upon contacting them I found that it is because the phone is blacklisted internationally.  I reported the phone to ebay as being fake as it is not as it is offered, now not sure that is how I should have worded it.  Just asking what I should expect as this was a big purchase for me I believe I should be refunded the expedited shipping and the full amount. Plus return shipping.  Was I wrong in the wording?  I hate not being able to talk to a person and everything being automated.  Thanks for any help in advance.

It's not the "wording" ... it's the "reason" that you choose when opening a return.

On any Any MBG return (Not as Described), the seller is required to pay return shipping.

And you will be refunded in full.

On a domestic transaction, the seller should send you a return label through the return menu within 3 business days of opening the return. On an international transaction, eBay cannot issue a return label through the system. The seller must manually send you a label or send funds for a label (upfront, not after).

If they do not send a return label, or funds for a label, you can ask eBay to step in on the 4th business day.

You will have 5 business days to use that label and get your return into the carrier's hands (scanned accepted).

Just for reference, these are the reasons that eBay gives to a buyer in the dropdown return menu: (pink are NAD, black are remorse)

Doesn't fit
Changed my mind
Found a better price
Just didn't like it
Ordered by mistake
Doesn't work or defective
Doesn't match description or photos
Wrong item sent
Missing parts or pieces
Arrived damaged
Doesn't seem authentic

I appreciate the information very much, its a live and learn. Its not a huge deal and I will find out with time but would one expect to get the shipping cost refunded for the expedited they paid?  I will be happy to get the phone money back but the reason for the expedited was because I was in need of a phone for a business trip and not really wanting to go buy another to find out I might be out a large amout of money if something goes south.

@meama_83

I just realized that you said you "asked eBay for help" ... If you have not actually opened a return yet ... do so now.

[How to start an MBG return]

Go to your Purchase History

Select "Return this Item" from the dropdown menu (if there is no big blue button).

Select "Not as Described"

The seller will have 3 business days to accept the return, or refund you in full (their choice).

When they accept the return, you will be issued a pre-paid return label.

*** On International returns, eBay cannot automatically issue a return label. The seller is obligated to manually send a label or send funds for a label (upfront, not after).***

If they do not, then you can ask ebay to step in on the 4th business day after opening the return.

You will have 5  business days to get the item into the mail. Make sure to get an acceptance scan.

When the return is Delivered back to the seller, they will have 2 business days to refund you. Your refund will include any amount of shipping that you originally paid at checkout.

If they do not, you can ask eBay to step in to force the refund.

You will get back the full amount that you originally paid including shipping assuming that you paid for the expedited shipping when you checked out...not later on as a separate transaction.

When I buy a new iPhone or iPad, I buy it directly from Verizon and pay for it over two years, interest free ($40-50 a month). Why risk dealing with a shady seller?

Advice for future purchases-  If Free Shipping is Free Standard and not Free Economy it is sent by USPS First Class, which USPS says delivers in 2-3 days.  Expedited is Priority Mail, a subset of First Class delivers in 1-3 days.  Basically, the same length of time to deliver.

eBay is the one that says First Class is 1-5 days.  USPS says different.  I always get First Class packages in a few days.   No way I'd pay $29.99 for PM when both types of mail go on the same plane or truck UNLESS the truck is full.  Then First Class goes on the next truck heading to or leaving the sort center.  And since cell phones fit in a small flat rate box there's no way I'd pay $29.99 for something that could cost $7-8 to ship it PM.

Yes, you get a full refund of the original cost after it is returned, and the seller is to provide a return shipping label.  That is how eBay makes them responsible for return shipping.  If they don't send a return label you'll be able to escalate the case and ask eBay for the label.  You don't get return shipping money reimbursed, just a return label.
