eBay - STILL - Allowing Fake Tracking Number Scam to Continue.

Sellers are still gaming eBay’s systems by providing fake tracking numbers showing items as “delivered”. It does not even matter to eBay that the tracking numbers that are provided by these unscrupulous sellers are actually shipped days before you placed your order, or that they are showing a delivery address that’s not yours in some other state. These things are very easy to programmatically check before eBay considers the item as “delivered” to the buyer causing buyers to waste time and lose access to their money fighting for a refund they may never get. This forum is full of identical complaints going on for years now. This just happened to me, in my case like so many others, the tracking was generated and shipped before I even placed my order and the delivery was to another state.. and it’s still happening to people every day years after unscrupulous sellers learned to exploit this loop hole. How long will eBay let this scam of gaming their systems to continue when it’s so easy to fix….?

eBay needs to be better than this..A6A3FB20-58E6-4DD7-8E03-D0829FF27287.png

Clip of another identical situation attached (just one more of many scammed eBay customers like myself) that eBay has decided to let get screwed over instead of implementing an easy fix.. Shame on you eBay!

Not long at all -- get them kicked off of eBay and get your money back from the scammer in one step.

Yep, and always more than one way to deal with these scammers, you just need to think outside the box.

I have a case open, eBay has all the info they need to issue a refund: Seller admits no item in stock and will not ship I’m messages.. No refund yet.

Seller tried to trick me into closing case (never close case until refund is issued or you will never get it)…

it’s in eBays hands now.. They need to take immediate action against these scammers..

see attached message from scammer..

Sorry to hear you got scammed.  Yes this scam is very easy to fix and a simple programming change to the tracking system would fix the issue 100% but from ebay nonresponse, they don't care.

This scam is also very easy to do if you know how.  I work in research and development for a tech company.   Last week I needed to order some lab supplies and used our company shipping account number to pay for shipping the supplies to me instead of allowing the vendor to charge me for shipping because the cost is much less.

what would cost a normal person $100 to ship costs about $30 to ship with the business account our company has.

(Which I think is why eBay got into the sell shipping label business because it would be a huge revenue game for ebay - but that's another post)

As I was in the shippers website setting up the shipment method I accidentally clicked a tab and a list of tracking numbers pages and pages long and 3 rows wide  appeared.

Being the first time I ever prearranged setting up paying for shipping of a vendors goods to myself. I thought oh I need to pick a tracking number.  So I clicked one and low and behold it was a shipment already in progress going to the zip code of the company I work and to where the vendors items needed to be shipped to but listed different address and different business name and address.   I clicked a couple and saw the same thing.

Then I realized hey, these tracking numbers are all valid and still in process.  And I said to myself **bleep**...that's how the fake tracking number scam works.  These scammers know about this exploit in the shippers business tracking system.

I won't post the shipping company name nor provide screenshots and but I am going to see if our shipping department can get me some contact information so I can contact the shipping company to see if this can be fixed.  Hopefully I can talk with someone in authority so I can explain the ebay tracking number scam and how allowing access to tracking numbers for neighboring businesses is a major exploit to scammers.

our shipping guys have no idea why these tracking numbers are available as they have never clicked the tab I clicked to see the numbers

But if I know about the exploit how many others know

@k_blueskies

If you already created your own thread about your issue then why on earth would you resurrect an ancient thread from 3 yrs ago? This thread is from 2021.

Not only that, but the party you are replying to is not likely to see your post as they haven't logged into this forum in a very long time.

Seems redundant.
