Apparently based on my most eBay purchase, when I put 92 in front of the FedEx SmartPost tracking number and enter the number on USPS.com , then I can see the tracking starting with the handoff and see the tracking of the package going forward with USPS.
Does it always work this way?
Does FedEx think that we are clairvoyant?

I tried that on an expensive package that is now lost, neither the longer number that got generated or the 92 in front of the Fedex number resulted in tracking via USPS. Fedex has been stuck on "Will be updated soon" since the 9th. I am out nearly $700 for this, I have never even heard of Fedex Smartpost and I have my own account number, buyer chose the shipping, had no choice in the matter.
I got totally hosed over by eBay too, no way to put a trace on the package, each blaming the other. This concludes 22 years of buying and selling on eBay, never again. I'll close this account once I get hosed over again on the lousy $100 claim that no one will pay.

A day after the estimated delivery date Ebay gave you, open an Item Not Received case.
Go to your purchase history and click I didn't get it in the menu next to the item.
The seller will have 3 days to provide a tracking number showing it was delivered or refund.
If they don't, return to the case on day 4 and ask Ebay to step in.

@catsheet is the seller in this case.
You need to read their OP which is here ---> https://community.ebay.com/t5/Shipping/Fedex-Smartpost-and-eBay-nightmare-I-might-be-done-after-this...

There is no winning in using Smartpost. You have to wait 20 days after the last update to file a claim, which is the ONLY way to put a tracer on it and then there is a high chance that they will say it was handed off to USPS and out of their hands. There is so much to keep track of when selling now and virtually no protections for a seller that it is just not worth it anymore. Just look at these terms, it's horrible! I honestly have never heard of this, I thought it was Fedex Ground, period!
It's become a total selling nightmare that lines the pockets of those who own eBay. I'm so done with this now.
